With a goal to provide 200 units of blood daily to meet the needs of Rhode Island and southern New England Hospitals, the Rhode Island Blood Center is dependent on drives conducted daily throughout the state at schools, colleges, businesses and state and municipal offices. This winter has made it all the more difficult with drives being canceled because of storms, said Rennie Simons, blood center account manager who was overseeing Friday’s drive at Toll Gate High. She said the largest drive in the region is traditionally at Electric Boat, where upwards of 185 units of blood are donated over three shifts. Teenagers 16 and older are permitted to donate and, as has been the past practice, there were a number of first-time student donors Friday.
