Nearly 1,000 young athletes from throughout New England and 3,000 spectators converged at the Rhode Island Convention Center over the weekend of Jan. 18-20 for the third annual Beauty and the Beast Gymnastics and Wrestling Invitational.

The unique event combines youth gymnasts and wrestlers competing side by side in a safe, fun-filled environment. The meet is hosted by Dream Big Gym of Cranston and directed by its owner, Shannon Cornicelli, a former All-State gymnast at Pilgrim High and stand out at Rhode Island College who currently resides in Cranston.

Big Gymnastics is a partner of Beat the Streets Providence, which provides positive enriching opportunities for inner-city youth. Beat the Streets utilizes wrestling as a hook to draw at-risk students into a positive after-school environment where they receive mandatory academic support, connect to strong mentors, engage in healthy physical activity, learn about nutrition and general health, and incentives to attend and succeed in school.
