Warwick drone operator Kyle Carpenter captured a unique view of a sunken barge that rests in the shallows off the coast of Oakland Beach, and shared the images on the Positive Warwick Facebook page. The photos prompted discussion from people who knew of the sunken vessel and those who had never known it existed. Specifics about the barge are hard to come by, but Warwick Historical Society President Felicia Gardella, citing information she learned from Ward 6 Councilwoman Donna Travis, believes the barge used to haul coal before being running aground over 50 years ago. The boat was then apparently used to launch fireworks for the July Fourth celebrations before burning down some time ago. Now the ghostly remains are all that is left, as seen in vivid detail during the 2008 super low tide, as photographed by Anne Diffily, also pictured. (Submitted photo by Kyle Carpenter)
