On Monday, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo announced that all public K-12 schools would continue online learning through the remainder of April, which also means that the Rhode Island Interscholastic League spring sports season will be pushed back further.
There is no set date for the start of the spring sports season, and the league will continue to work with the governor and the Principals’ Committee on Athletics to work on a new date according to the next steps regarding the continuation of the public school year.
“We realize this health crisis is becoming increasingly difficult for everyone. It has required everyone to make sacrifices, and it will unfortunately mean missed opportunities for many of our student-athletes. However, this situation is bigger than any one of us. This is about the health and well being of our country. Everyone’s primary focus should be on doing their part by following the guidelines that the Governor and RIDOH have put in place to try and prevent the spread of the coronavirus,” said RIIL Executive Director Thomas Mezzanotte in a statement. “We hope our student-athletes are utilizing this time productively and are providing various resources through the RIIL website and our social media platforms to help everyone stay engaged. Physical distancing does not - and should not - mean isolation. One of the greatest benefits of playing sports are the friendships that are formed among teammates. We applaud the creative ways that some of you have found to stay connected, while still following the important guidelines regarding social distancing. Just as that sense of unity and camaraderie helps you overcome adversity on the playing field, those friendships hopefully will also provide you with the emotional support you need to get through this difficult time. The RIIL wishes everyone the very best as we all continue to adjust to this new way of learning and living. Please do everything you can to keep yourself and your families safe and healthy. We are stronger together and we will get through this together.”
