Richard W. Berggren, age 87, of Village Green Circle, Coventry, and formerly of Warwick, died on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. He was the beloved husband of Svea L. (Carlson) Berggren.

Born in Cranston, the son of the late Warren H. Berggren and Doris E. (Hodsdon) Keough, he lived in Warwick for 45 years, moving to Coventry in 2017. He was the step-son of the late Daniel J. Keough.

Mr. Berggren entered the United States Air Force in 1952, during the Korean War, and was commissioned as an Air Force pilot in 1954. During the Vietnam War, he flew over 200 missions. A recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, he retired from the Air Force with the rank of Major in 1972. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and the D.A.V. Mr. Berggren was later employed at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in North Kingstown for 19 years, retiring from there in 1993.

He was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Warwick.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Richard C. Berggren and his wife Carol, of West Kingston, and Robert A. Berggren and his wife Mary, of Clear Brook, VA; a daughter, Bethany L. Waters and her husband Richard, of Warwick; a sister, Carolyn A. Boyden of Naples, FL; a step-sister, Elaine White of South Kingstown; and two granddaughters, Lauren Aguiar and Sarah Berggren.

His funeral will be held on Thursday, July 19, at 10 a.m from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Service at 11 a.m. in Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1817 Warwick Avenue, Warwick. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery, North Kingstown.
