More than 300 Holliman students made up Tuesday’s reading parade organized by reading specialist Ali Kanaczet and held at the Pilgrim track. Kanaczet started planning for the event last fall, gaining approvals from Holliman Principal Joseph Coffey and Pilgrim for use of the track and special dispensation to take a car on the track (provided it was driven very slowly) to transport parade marshal Jean Adams. Adams, who served many years as the school secretary, is a recent retiree and as Coffey explained “always loves kids.” Following the parade that circled the track three times the kids, many of them dressed as their favorite book character, joined for a ceremony organized by kindergarten teacher Joan Wilkinson outside Holliman where they thanked and recognized Adams. Kanaczet is already thinking of ways to top this year’s reading celebration. She hope to involve student musicians and, who knows, what else.
