Protecting provisions of the ACA

To the Editor:

I am writing to thank Representative Joseph McNamara and Senator Joshua Miller for their work as sponsors of the RI Market Stability and Consumer Protection Act (H5916/S738).

This bill will make sure that the consumer protections of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) remain in effect in Rhode Island regardless of what happens in Washington. This means that insurers in Rhode Island would continue to be required to provide coverage regardless of any pre-existing condition and to cover certain essential health benefits including for mental health services, maternity care, preventative services and screenings, among others.

I first became active in the effort to protect the gains in healthcare coverage under the ACA two years ago because I know first hand how important access to care is for every Rhode Islander. It is because of ACA protections that my own child was able to get necessary care for a sudden and serious medical condition. I don’t know what we would have done without it. With ongoing efforts to erode provisions of the ACA at the federal level, I commend the efforts of Representative McNamara and Senator Miller to protect Rhode Islanders.

I encourage all my neighbors to support this bill and thank Representative McNamara and Senator Miller for their leadership.
