Solomon wins in blowout

Grabs 65 percent of vote, will face Stenhouse in November

Posted

Joseph Solomon is one step closer to being the duly elected mayor of Warwick, as he easily defeated his Democratic challengers during Wednesday’s primary by grabbing close to 65 percent of the vote.

Solomon has repeated during his approximately four months in office, following the departure of former Mayor Scott Avedisian in the midst of his 18th year in office, that he wants to help make “an even better Warwick,” and has touted his ability to examine financial information and work with local businesses and residents – in addition to his 20 years of experience in local government – as his top qualifications for the job.

While both his challengers, Richard Corrente and Gerald “Ged” Carbone, campaigned hard and participated in a pre-primary forum to discuss their views on the issues and were able to nab over 3,000 votes between the both of them, even that number was just a fraction of Solomon’s final count.

“It’s a blow out,” was a phrase heard more than once from Solomon’s campaign manager Jackie Baginski as poll results were posted to a packed campaign headquarters.

“This is beautiful,” Solomon said as he descended from a second floor office where the numbers were tallied. He said the voters put their confidence in a “steady reliable mayor who puts the taxpayers first.”

Solomon will now face off against former Warwick City Councilwomen Sue Stenhouse, the lone Republican challenger who has garnered the support of Avedisian and has already thrown two pointed political jabs at Solomon’s leadership, indicating things might get even more heated as things kick into gear towards November.

While Solomon’s race could be considered a blowout, other local races were squeakers, especially in Senate District 29 and Ward 8.

Compared to the ranks of Democrats, there aren’t many registered Republicans in Warwick; nonetheless there was a rare local Republican primary for the Representative District 21 seat held by incumbent Camille Vella-Wilkinson.

Facing off for the party’s nomination were Michael Underwood and Ron Loparto. Underwood, who says he wants to lead ethics reform, approve the line-item veto and do away with truck tolls came out the winner. Underwood was visible throughout the district Tuesday, driving a moped (he joked about saving energy) between polling districts.

With a heated three-way primary for the Republican gubernatorial candidate on the top of the ticket – Cranston Mayor Allan Fung coming out the winner on that one – the only local Republican primary contest saw more voters than would have been expected otherwise.

Taking nothing for granted, incumbent District 29 senator and Senate Majority Leader Michael McCaffrey staged a vigorous campaign in his bid for Democratic nomination with political newcomer Jennifer Rourke. McCaffrey signs were ubiquitous. He sent out more than one mailer to those who have voted in Democratic primaries and in the week leading up to the primary placed robo calls reminding voters that the primary was Wednesday, not Tuesday, and naturally, that he was respectfully asking for their support. McCaffrey sees his leadership position in the Senate as benefiting Warwick. It paid off.

Proud of her position as an “outsider” Rourke advocated change and keeping corporations out of politics.

McCaffrey won and, there being no Republican or independent seeking the seat, will return to the senate.

In surely what turned out to be the nastiest of Warwick primary contests, which might be considered humdrum by Providence politics standards, first-time senate candidate Mark McKenney beat incumbent Jeanine Calkin to represent the constituents of Senate District 30. The first dustup in the contest was over the endorsement and that the district committee selected McKenney over Calkin, who beat the late incumbent William Walaska. Calkin was aligned with the Bernie Sanders Democrats who came on strong in the closing weeks of the 2016 Democratic Presidential primary. As it turned out, McKenney had long considered running for the district and out of respect for Walaska, chose not to contest him in a primary.

In the closing days of this year’s primary, The Value Project, a partnership of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence and Planned Parenthood mailed a flyer in support of Calkin implying McKenney favored guns in schools, although McKenney had answered a coalition questionnaire that he opposed guns in schools. Calkin disavowed any involvement with the flyer, but McKenney responded with a flyer of his own.

With his win, McKenney will be the new District 30 senator as there are no challengers in the November election.

In addressing those at Solomon headquarters, McKenney said “more reasonable, common sense” campaigning paid off. He said he walked the district and he aims to offer constituents “a little more centric approach” than Rourke.

In the Ward 4 contest for the City Council seat held by Joseph Solomon until he assumed the role of mayor to complete the term of Scott Avedisian, Jim McElroy won the nomination over Ernest Flagg. McElroy had Solomon’s support and the party’s endorsement. Both candidates put on a strong bid for the seat, walking the ward and posting their signs throughout the neighborhood. McElroy goes on to face Michael Penta, who is running as an independent in November.

In Ward 8, where incumbent Joseph Gallucci chose not to seek reelection, Bethany Furtado lost to Anthony Sinapi. Furtado, currently chair of the School Committee, gained Gallucci and the ward committee’s endorsement but she faced an uphill battle against Sinapi who, according to sources had the support of the teachers union. Sinapi was critical of Furtado’s 12-year tenure on the School Committee, claiming mismanagement. Furtado defended her service to schools and the tough decisions that had to be made over consolidation. There being no other candidates for Ward 8, Sinapi's win means he will hold the post next year.

To the Twice-Losing Mayoral Candidate Richard Corrente:

You have failed, yet again, to do anything but humiliate yourself in public. As predicted, thousands of honest, taxpaying voters rejected your candidacy today, making you the first candidate this century to lose to two different mayors in Warwick.

The results from yesterday are 100 percent your fault.

    You made that happen.

Not “political insiders,” not website commenters, not the media.

    You, and only you.

I'm sure you're going to use this site, one last time, to post a pathetic statement claiming otherwise.

Go ahead. Try to convince other people, one last time, that the facts are wrong and you’re right.

And then, after you’re done making a pathetic fool of yourself, one last time, do us all a favor and go away.

    Dear CrickeeRaven,

Sorry, I won't do you the favor of going away, but I will give you a challenge. I spent tens of thousands of MY dollars and hundreds of hours to make Warwick a better place for the 80,000 taxpayers that are paying the tab. Why don't you do something, anything to help, because so far here is a list of what YOU have done for those 80,000 taxpayers that I love.

    1.

    2.

    3.

    4.

    5.

    6.

    etc.

    etc.

Get my point CrickeeRaven? You anonymous coward of a critic.

    Happy September everyone.

"I spent tens of thousands of MY dollars and hundreds of hours to make Warwick a better place for the 80,000 taxpayers that are paying the tab."

False. The cosplay candidate lied to voters, spent money on campaigns instead of his property taxes, repeatedly made false claims about the school population and business community in Warwick, refused to answer questions about his ethically questionable campaign finance activities, and claimed an endorsement that he did not have.

He used his time and money in a futile, desperate attempt to get attention for his pathetic candidacy -- and he failed.

"[H]ere is a list of what YOU have done..."

This is the list that the cosplay candidate is looking for:

    1. Provided verifiable public information that proved him a liar.

    2. Ensured that none of his delusional rants went unchallenged.

    3. Pointed out he you used this website for free political advertising.

    4. Kept presenting the truth to readers.

    5. Specifically identified where he twisted and spun facts.

    6. Consistently proved that his disgraceful, juvenile behavior made him unfit for office.

Etc. etc. etc.: Joined thousands of honest, taxpaying voters in rejecting his candidacy and keeping him away from the mayor's office.

    "Get my point CrickeeRaven?"

Yes, the two-time failing candidate is a sore loser who still thinks, after yesterday's humiliating defeat, that he has any reason to keep making comments on this website.

The two-time election loser still shows a complete lack of comprehension.

    "[Y]our dispute of MY accomplishments..."

The verifiable, public information presented about the two-time election loser was not a matter of opinion or difference of perspective. That information objectively proved him a liar, tax delinquent, and unfit candidate for any office.

Here is the latest proof of how unfit he was to run for office:

"I asked What did YOU accomplish?"

I helped inform honest, taxpaying voters about him, which justified their decision to keep him from the mayor's office by an overwhelming margin.

He had -- and has -- no accomplishments, only a long list of failures. And with every new comment, the list gets longer.

RC, you made a personal decision to run for Mayor twice. No one put a gun to your head to force you to spend all that money. Instead of listening when people pointed out that you were running on wrong numbers and wrong facts, you not only continued to do so but tried to insult those that had PROOF you were wrong. Most intelligent people would be able to look inward and see the error of their ways. You wouldn't or couldn't.

You spent your time writing ingratiating and fawning comments on articles that were about teachers, unions, city council members and anyone else you thought would help you gain traction in your campaign. You took a local paper that many people enjoy and made the comment section free advertisement for yourself. In the end, it didn't get you anywhere. It was a completely obvious tactic and everyone saw it for what it was.

Many of us do put our money where our mouth (keyboard) is. We are at city meetings, we are at schools, events, charities and community outreach. We are trying to make our city a better place in our own corner of the world. You don't have to run for office to do that. My efforts aren't any less than yours because I don't have political aspirations.

Do you really need the pat on the back so bad to make yourself feel better than someone else? Running for office doesn't make you a better person. You even gave yourself a title you didn't earn. As if by merely calling yourself mayor, you could somehow make it a reality. Hopefully the results of the Primary were enough to give you the reality check you desperately need. You have no right to point a finger at anyone else just because you ran for office two times. You know what they say about a fool and his money, right?

Congrats to Joe Solomon and be careful what you wish for. The same for Ms. Stenhouse. The similarity to Cranston's financial situation circa 2000 when Laffey became Mayor and inherited a train wreck is striking, or Tavares from Cicilline. Mr. Solomon has served close to two decades, therefore there should be no surprises to him. I'm trying to be fair but it certainly looks like meet the new boss, same as the old boss and what are the possibilities of real change and living within our means? Call me "Doubting Thomas" until proven otherwise. Meanwhile, Chapter 9 is looming out there for Warwick and a whole lot of other Rhode Island communities...Time will tell.

Cat, you very succinctly and accurately outline the obvious defects in the two-time loser's candidacy and approach to running for office -- obvious to anyone except him, as his continued pathetic behavior proves.

He took the absolute worst behavior that a candidate could exhibit, and then added juvenile online behavior.

I am so glad that our honest, taxpaying neighbors saw the 'Troll Candidacy' for what it was and utterly, overwhelmingly rejected it again yesterday.

bendover, there are some differences between Warwick today and Cranston in 2000. For example, in Cranston the prior mayor tried to go three years without a tax rate increase, which was impossible.

In Warwick, the council tried that for one year and realized it couldn't be repeated a second time.

On the other hand, if you're referring to the idea that a Democratic mayor and majority Democratic city council could lead to poor budget decisions in the name of political expedience [as happened in the four years leading up to Laffey's election], there may be something to that.

And with 18 years on the council, I wouldn't say Solomon is inheriting anything. He's had as much of a hand in the city's finances as anyone, and arguably shouldn't go trying to blame anyone else for what's happened on his watch.

To no ones surprise the TWICE FAILED, make believe Mayor Rick Corrente shows zero class in defeat. He ignores his blowout loss, and attacks honest, hard working voters, who just by paying their taxes alone contribute more to Warwick than Corrente ever has. CrickeeRavens biggest contribution to the city of Warwick has been fact checking a habitual liar like Rick Corrente. As predicted, voters were not fooled by his recycled slogans and talking points. As I predicted Corrente finished with fewer than 3,000 votes after he claimed he was carrying 14,000 votes into this election. He actually said if everyone was forced to vote he believes he would win. Imagine that ego after getting blown out in 2 straight elections. Face it Rick, the voters have spoken...AGAIN. In closing I'd ask Corrente to end his campaign with some shred of dignity, but with the lies you've told I'm not sure it ever had it. I look forward to exposing more Corrente lies, and calling him out for the fraud he is.

But if there's one thing we know from the two-time failure's behavior, it is that he refuses to face facts and instead constructs a fantasy world for himself where he actually matters to anyone except himself.

Well at least the two time loser has removed his self proclaimed title. Maybe that is his first step back to reality. He has zero accomplishments in this city, He has never fought for a cause independently as a resident without political aspirations. He has yet to gain any attention of the major media in this state as they typically do not cover buffoonery.

He has 16 of 16 losses in court as a defendant.

He has a record of tax delinquency.

His thoughts and actions are indicative of someone who is suffering and unstable.

I can remember when 4 years ago when I had lunch with him at Governor Francis Inn and he explained to me that the way into politics was to befriend the unions and they could be convinced to make major concessions. I explained to him that this logic was just not possible. He told me to watch and see what he would do.

In early 2016 he called me and told me that if I did not run for mayor than he would. I explained to him that I had no aspirations to take control of a sinking ship and to take a cut in pay to do so just to have enormous headaches. He told me to sit back and watch which I have done.

It was clear then (and now) that not only did he have zero research skills, but he was compromised due to his tax delinquency, which by the way, I made public after getting a tip and performing the research and gathering the documents. Lots of documents. Then low and behold, a piece of mail came to me with his child support delinquency issues. Clearly that document had to be sent by a person involved in the family court system as the stenographers notes are not made public to anyone but both parties.

I take pride in "outing" the self proclaimed public servant for being the charlatan that he is and hopefully, information that I researched and made public played some roll in preventing him from ever becoming an elected official

    THE DEFENSE RESTS!!

WwkVoter, here's even further proof that the two-time election loser was a defective candidate: He spent $1,770 between Dec. 1, 2017 [just before he announced his run] and his second loss on Wednesday: https://bit.ly/2QvcCOZ

Notably, nearly half of that, $794.99 was spent in the last month prior to the vote: https://bit.ly/2p4qZ0q

Based on RI Board of Elections that he received 1,834 votes in his loss on Wednesday [https://www.ri.gov/election/results/2018/statewide_primary/warwick/], that means he went cheap and spent 96 cents per vote, compared to the $2.83 per vote he spent to lose the 2016 race -- and still wrongly expected to be competitive.

Even after his blowout loss, the two-time failed candidate is still falsely claiming that he spent "tens of thousands of dollars," trying to fool people into thinking it was for the 2018 campaign.

You and I and 6,000 of our honest, taxpaying neighbors were not fooled, however, and as you say, in time the two-time loser will be a minor, forgotten footnote in the election history of Warwick.

This is a lie. The two-time failure only cared about putting comments on this website in blatant disregard for the published rules governing its rules that prohibit political advertising.

Whatever he thinks this behavior accomplishes -- getting other people angry? feeling good for what he thinks are witty insults? -- it actually, in the reality that mature people inhabit, does not. It only gives us more reason to dismiss him as a two-time election loser who believed that the same behavior that led to his loss in 2016 would somehow change the outcome in 2018.

Thanks for giving me credit for the money I spent trying to make Warwick a better place. You said it was $1,770 this time. Add that to the $40,000+ I spent last time and that is a total of about $42,000 that I spent of my OWN money (NO PAC checks. None!) I spent that to get my Corrente Plan across to the 80,000 taxpayers that are paying the tab. How much of YOUR money have YOU spent on their behalf? You're right. NONE! What ideas (other than a trashing of mine) have YOU come up with in the last four years for the benefit of those 80,000 taxpayers? You're RIGHT! NONE!

You torch my ideas but the truth is, you NEVER ONCE came up with a BETTER IDEA! Or ANY idea for that matter. Guess my ideas, as BAD as you say they were, were the best, weren't they? Well, at least, better than yours, right? And one more thing. I have the self-confidence to state my opinions openly and honestly, using my REAL name. I even post my REAL phone number. You have a name that is so fake, it's scary and you're afraid to come out of the shadows. You know what? Maybe you should stay there. Maybe you belong there. Maybe you're just too much of a coward to let anyone know who you really are Mark. Aren't you!

You anonymous coward of a critic!

Bendover, another commenter "Justanidiot" said it best on here last week. Everyone pretends they have this "vote them all out" attitude, the reality is its "vote them all out...except for my State Rep he's a nice guy". The end result is a couple state reps get picked off and lose, but the majority return to office and nothing changes. Rinse, wash, repeat unfortunately. I hope we learn from our lessons soon.

Crickee, nothing surprises me with the disgraced, TWICE FAILED candidate. I find it incredibly weird the way he chooses to "insult" people. It shows how truly erratic this failure has become. Let me tell you something Rick, you can call me any name you'd like. You can make sick, childish references and pass them off as "insults" if you'd like, I'll be fine if some deadbeat, twice failed fraud doesn't want to be my friend. Somehow I will carry on.

All of the insults in the world will not change the fact Rick Corrente lost his home to tax sale (Warwick Beacon). It will not change the years he couldn't pay his car or property taxes on time. It will not change the fact he loaned his campaign $40,000 while he couldn't pay his water/sewer bills on time. It will not change the fact he needed someone else to pay his property taxes for him (not his lender like he claims). It will not add to his vote totals meaning he couldn't even reach 2,000 votes after running for 2 years and claiming he was carrying 14,000 votes over from 2016. It will not rewrite history or the fact he is a two time loser, who has been overwhelmingly rejected by Warwick voters in back to back elections. Not just back to back elections...it was against 2 different candidates from 2 different parties. Its hard to draw any conclusion other than the fact Warwick voters looked at Rick Corrente and said "not a chance".

There is no path forward for Rick Corrente in Warwick politics. His ignorance and lies won't ever allow for him to grow as a candidate. Rather than look in the mirror Rick Corrente would rather insult me or Cat or CrickeeRaven. Again I ask, has he congratulated Joe Solomon? Or is Rick too busy patting himself on the back to handle himself with any dignity? I look forward to the next blabbering, non sensical, pandering post from the TWO TIME FAILED CANDIDATE, The Tax Delinquents Mayor, Rick Corrente.

Allow me to translate the two-time sore loser's recent comments, including the one above:

    "WAAAAAAAH!"

And then he proceeds to humiliate himself even further...

"You said it was $1,770 this time."

No, the two-time sore loser reported that he spent $1,770 from Dec. 1, 2017 through his second humiliating loss on Sept. 12, 2018 on his own campaign finance reports: https://bit.ly/2QvcCOZ

"I spent that to get my [false statements] across to the 80,000 taxpayers that are paying the tab."

No, the two-time sore loser wasted that money to lose a second election by a margin of 65 to 18 percent. And he continues to lie about the number of taxpayers in the city.

"What ideas... have YOU come up with in the last four years...?"

Keeping the two-time sore loser out of the mayor's office by presenting verifiable facts that prove him a liar, and by drawing the clear, obvious, and logical conclusions from those facts.

"Guess my ideas, as BAD as you say they were, were the best, weren't they?"

No, they weren't, because they lost on Sept. 12. By a huge margin.

"I have the self-confidence to state my opinions openly and honestly..."

Openly? Yes, by using this website for free political advertising.

Honestly? No. Virtually all of the two-time sore loser's statements have been disproven by fact. That has not changed, and will not change because he continues to post angry, juvenile comments on this website.

Thank you to all the commenters here and the 6,000+ honest, taxpaying voters who rejected this disgrace of a former candidate on Sept. 12.

I can't count the number of times I have explained different policy ideas in this forum. I will not repeat myself yet again, anyone who'd like to find it bad enough can. There is 1 other distinction between commenters here anf Rick Corrente (other than the fact we pay our taxes)...NONE OF US ARE CANDIDATES FOR PUBLIC OFFICE!!!! The fact Rick Corrente doesn't understand this is just yet another reason, on a list of dozens of others, that he lost, and that he is not qualified to run for public office. He is becoming more and more UNHINGED with each passing comment.

Scal, it is beyond comprehension how the two-time sore loser can still demand to be taken seriously after all of the behavior that he willingly and repeatedly exhibited on this website.

Your example is yet further proof: He fails to hold himself to the basic standards that mature people expect of candidates for office.

It is difficult for me to imagine the level of denial that one must have to fail as badly as he has and still -- still! -- insist that he is somehow better than others.

And he's not trying to do that by taking the high road or being graceful in defeat -- no, he's only acting worse, and as you rightly said, more unhinged, with every new comment.

As I keep saying, he's done this to himself. He ran an anemic 2018 campaign, basically arguing that he didn't have to work at it this time because of what he did two years ago, and got the exact result that he deserved for it.

Yet, here he still is, picking fights with the commenters who provided, time after time, objective and verified information that disproved his statements, as if his petty insults will change those facts.

But they won't. We and the 6,000+ honest, taxpaying voters who joined us to reject his candidacy on Sept. 12 know the truth about him -- and nothing he can say or do now will change that.

Someone is a bit touchy today. Understandable. I guess you already forgot the glowing praise you gave me for the ideas I came up with regarding the DPW security issues. How about the idea I had for you to correct your public records so they couldn't be used against you? Or maybe the idea that you could have the CPA that told you the audit wasn't independent speak to the WCC and explain their reasoning?

Ideas? I got plenty. Political aspirations? Not a single one. I have plenty of hopes and dreams but being in politics isn't one of them. I have this really serious problem called "I call it like I see it" and it isn't very useful in the game of politics. You think you deserve some type of reward for running for office? Maybe you want a statue erected as you suggested for others for all the good deeds you did over the last 4 years. I have only encountered this type of personality once before and unfortunately they decided to get into politics too.

Feel free to reach out if you need more ideas. Cathayes2222@gmail.com

Allent, well over 7,000 voters chose to vote for someone other than Rick Corrente. You can choose to believe its all one person commenting here, but the numbers suggest something much different: an overwhelming rejection by thousands of people. I'd say just by doing simple math you can see its not just a handful of people who disagree with him. Anyways, if you are a Corrente supporter tough race, better luck in 2020. As long as he uses this website to peddle his propaganda, I will be here to correct him and expose him for the lying fraud that he is.

Scal, what an odd comment by allent. He seems to think it's "strange" that most commenters disagree with the two-time failure unless it can be explained by some kind of conspiracy theory.

In the end, the point remains that the two-time sore loser could have conducted himself very differently but chose not to, and he lost as a direct result of that decision.

[And by the way, aren't conspiracy theories about commenters' identities something the two-time election loser has tried to push?]

    Huh.

Candidate Corrente spent $42K of his own money.

Funny how he once claimed he could only afford $10/week in child support. We do have priorities though.

Don't forget, ThatGuy, that the majority of that was spent in 2015-16 when he wasn't paying his property taxes, and that he spent $1,770 this time around while other parties were paying the property taxes and sewer and water bills for his former residence [he moved out earlier this year].

Your point stands, though, that it's hardly the kind of spending one would expect from someone who cried 'poverty' in Family Court.
