DEM INVESTIGATING BOATING FATALITY

On July 30, the Warwick Harbor Master responded to a call for a medical emergency on a private vessel off Conimicut Point in Warwick. Kerrie Macaruso, 41 of North Providence, sustained fatal injuries while attempting to walk through an opening towards the bow of the vessel when a wave struck, according to a press release.

Warwick Fire and Police, along with DEM's Division of Law Enforcement, responded to the Oakland Beach boat ramp where she was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and pronounced deceased.

The vessel, a 1991 Stingray, was taken into the custody of DEM’s Division of Law Enforcement, who is continuing to investigate the incident.

ROCKS THROWN AT ROCKY POINT

On July 19 at approximately 1 a.m., Officer Alfred Silveira was on patrol in Warwick Neck when he observed approximately 15 cars in the Rocky Point Park parking lot. As the park was closed, the officer parked his cruiser at the front gate to patrol the park.

As Officer Silveira approached the beach, he observed approximately 20 people gathered around a small fire. Upon his arrival, many of the individuals dispersed, however four stayed behind to clean up the area. Those individuals put out the fire and removed the debris the group had created.

According to the report, as the officer returned to his cruiser he met two witnesses who stated they had observed a suspect throw multiple handfuls of rocks at the cruiser. They also stated that the male suspect proceeded to take a video of the damaged cruiser while cursing and making offensive comments about law enforcement. The witnesses gave a description of the man, what he was wearing, the type of vehicle he was driving and a license plate number.

Officer Silveira then broadcast the vehicle registration over the radio, and dispatch provided the information to the rest of the patrol units. Shortly after, Sergeant James Michailides stopped the vehicle in the area of Burger King on Centerville Road and identified the operator as Cody Parizeau, 18, of 40 Adirondack Drive in East Greenwich. The witnesses were then brought to the scene, and confirmed that Parizeau was the suspect.

Parizeau was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with vandalism/malicious injury to property and throwing objects at a police vehicle. He was then issued a mandatory Third District Court summons.

BOAT KEYED

Officer Manuel Pacheco was dispatched to the Oakland Beach Yachting Center on Bay Avenue on July 16 around 10 p.m. for a malicious damage report.

At the scene he met with the complainants, who stated that they had been at the marina working on their dry dock. During that time, they had their 2005 Baja Outlaw 38 foot boat in the parking lot on a trailer. At approximately 7 p.m. they returned to the boat and observed both sides had been keyed nearly the entire length of the boat. The victims stated that they had been using the marina for years and had not had any problems.

A check with several subjects in the area was unsuccessful in identifying any suspects. No camera surveillance was available, and there are no suspects at this time.

CAR KEYED

On July 17 around 6:40 p.m., Officer William Holz was dispatched to Sparrow Point I Apartments on Hardig Road for a report of malicious damage to a vehicle.

Upon arrival he met with the car’s owner, who stated that her vehicle had been keyed. The officer observed a large scrape on the passenger side door that was approximately two feet in length. The owner stated that she had been home for about two hours when she returned to the car and noticed the damage. The victim also told the officer that she had heard that a number of vehicles parked in handicapped spots had recently been keyed.

There are currently no suspects or witnesses.

SKIMMING OFF THE TOP

At approximately 8:24 p.m. on July 17, Officer Walter Larson responded to the Subway located in the Warwick Mall food court in reference to a larceny.

At the scene he met with the reporting party, who stated that an unknown male approached her and wished to exchange multiple piles of one dollar bills for larger denominations. She told the officer that there was approximately $40 in piles, and that when he exchanged the bills he would take a few off the top unbeknownst to the employee.

Several transactions like these occurred, and when the register drawer was counted, it was short approximately $90. The restaurant wishes to pursue charges should a suspect be found, and the report was forwarded to detectives for review.

FELONY SHOPLIFTING

\Officer Thomas Duncan was dispatched to the LensCrafters store at the Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting that had occurred earlier in the day.

At the scene the officer met with a store manager, who stated that at approximately 11 a.m., a black male with facial hair and several tattoos wearing a red shirt, khaki cargo shorts and white sneakers had entered the store and selected several glasses.

The glasses included one pair of Armani Exchange valued at $100. 2 Persol sunglasses valued at a total of $500, 4 Ray Ban glasses valued at a total of $800 and two Ray Ban Wayfarers valued at a total of $300. The man placed all of the glasses in his shorts before exiting the store without attempting to pay.

Surveillance cameras captured the incident and a copy was prepared for the police. The manager also stated that an alert from the North Attleboro store that gave information about a shoplifting suspect was identical to the individual who had entered the Warwick store.

LensCrafters wishes to pursue charges if a suspect is found, and the case was forwarded to detectives for review.
