Pats fall to Clippers, Falcons

The Pilgrim Patriots were beaten 69-12 by the Falcons, and then 72-12 by the Cumberland Clippers during a Wrestling Tri Meet on Tuesday night hosted by Cranston High School West.

Pilgrim junior Hunter Nemirow got the Pats their first win late in its first contest, which came against West sophomore Jacob Robert, who Nemirow pinned at 3:06 in the second period, during the 195-pound division bout.

Next, Pats senior Dikran Krikorian earned a pin at 220 pounds against West sophomore Rory Perrino at 2:37.

“He’s coming along nice,” Pats head coach Tom O’Connor said. “He’s our only senior. He’s a captain and he’s working hard and he’s getting better. He had two good wins today.”

Pilgrim had a total of eight forfeits throughout that Falcons match, and then seven more when it faced off against Cumberland.

The athletes that did wrestle turned in a valiant effort.

“I think all the kids came out and performed,” O’Connor said. “We got injuries and we got sickness. We got half a team down and the other kids are stepping up and doing the best they can. We wrestled hard. Each match we’re improving and that’s all I can ask for.”

Nemirow and Krikorian came through again for Pilgrim in the second match, against the Clippers, with Nemirow pinning senior Matthew Vaudrain, and Krikorian flattening Adam Barboza, a junior.

Pats sophomore Brady Burke was beaten twice on the night at 145 pounds – first in a decision by West freshman Matt DeFusco, and then Burke was pinned by Cumberland senior Matt Maguire.

Burke, according to O’Connor, was a little under the weather, but the sophomore stud toughed it out because so many wrestlers were out.

Pilgrim traveled to Cranston East on Wednesday evening, but the score was unavailable at press time.
