Fallon's gem leads Pilgrim to 4-0 win over Falcons

The Pilgrim softball team edged out visiting Cranston West 4-0 last Friday afternoon to continue its hot start to the season.

Pilgrim ace and UMaine commit Cat Fallon threw a gem in the circle for the Patriots, finishing the afternoon with a whopping 17 strikeouts while allowing just two hits.

“Everything was kind of working, I felt good today. I am not afraid to pitch this year because I have everyone behind me and they don’t really make mistakes. Everything felt good today,” said Fallon after the win.

“She was great today. Through the first two games we have not given up a run and she has been a big part of that. She’s pitching well, she’s hitting her spots. She got down on a few counts today but battled back and those were some big outs that she ended up getting. She has great control, and if she is hitting her spots then we will be in good shape,” added Pilgrim coach Paul Kennedy.

The two clubs were scoreless through three innings, but the Pats would jump ahead in the bottom of the fourth when Jill Ricci hit an RBI double with two outs. Taylor Soffoletto would add another RBI with a single that scored Janessa Clements, and would later score on an error to make it 3-0.

“This was one of those games where you figured it would be a 1-run game. It was cold and their pitcher was pitching well too. We got to the middle of our order and they came through,” said Kennedy of the 4th-inning outburst.

Amelia Murphy would knock in another run in the fifth to set the score to 4-0.

“I trust my team, I trust that they will get the runs when we need them. It took a little longer today than we would have liked but I knew that it was going to happen and that I just had to do what I had to do,” said Fallon.

Livia Feole had a strong outing for the Falcons as well, finishing the afternoon with four strikeouts and allowing four hits. Julia Hazian and Olivia Conte had West’s lone hits.

“You’ve got to tip your hat to Cat Fallon. If she is not the best (pitcher) in the state then she is definitely in the discussion. She was on, we really struggled to get base runners on and when we did it we had trouble moving them along, they shut us down,” said West coach Jeff Smith, who was also proud of his hurler’s performance. “She pitched well, and our defense played well. We just had one little hiccup in the fourth inning. Usually the one that makes the first mistake is the one that pays for it. We look forward to the rematch.”

The Pats improved to 2-0 with the win and will take on North Kingstown today.

“It helps our confidence but we’re not going to be complacent, we’re not done yet,” said Fallon. “We know that our season is harder as it goes on, we are happy but we’re not comfortable.”
