The Pilgrim softball team continued to roll this regular season, topping visiting Mount St. Charles 4-1 in a tough battle last week.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, the Pats would regain the lead when Dyonna Rodas hit an RBI single, followed by a sacrifice fly from Bryanna Rastella to make it 2-1. Pilgrim would get a cushion in the bottom half of the sixth, when Deidra Clements and Cat Fallon knocked in RBI to make it 4-1.

Emily Carter took the circle in place of ace Fallon, who was getting a maintenance day, and shined as she hurled a complete-game, two-hitter to shut down the Mounties.

“Although it wasn’t there early, our defense was there and (Carter) pitched to our defense. She is very good, even in the last inning, she got herself into a jam but was able to get out of it. We needed her to pitch today, we had to give Cat a break. We needed her and we are happy with what she did today,” said Pilgrim coach Paul Kennedy after the win.

The Pats’ offense has been among the top units in the state, averaging double-digit runs per game scored. However, Mount pitcher Marissa Tessier held the Pilgrim bats in check for most of the contest, and Kennedy was impressed with her ability to hit her spots and keep his club on its toes.

“She mixed it up. She didn’t necessarily have a pitch that was overwhelming, but she was mixing it up and spotting it well. She had a good changeup that also gave us fits, she kept us off balance all game. We got the bats going later in the game, but she kept us off balance and it was a good pitching effort for her,” said Kennedy.

Pilgrim improved to 12-1 overall with the win and faced Prout on Monday afternoon. The results were not available at press time.

With the regular season winding down, Kennedy felt that such a tight game could pay dividends as the Pats look to take home the Division I State Championship.

“We don’t take anyone for granted. Even a team that has struggled a little bit (like Mount), we can’t take anyone for granted,” said Kennedy. “Records don’t matter, anything could happen on any given day. You need to come out with your a game every game and today we didn’t, they gave us fits today.”
