Pats lax ready to turn things around

The Pilgrim girls lacrosse team had a down year last spring, finishing the season with a 2-11 record in Division II. However, the Lady Pats have gotten off to a strong start this spring, bringing a new energy to the field every day and taking home a win at their Injury Fund game this past weekend over Cranston East. “I am so excited, this is the best team morale that we’ve ever had,” said Pilgrim coach Jess McCaughey. “Our work ethic is awesome, the little things like fundamentals are there, to see the motivation and hard work early in the season, it’s exciting.” McCaughey has been pleased with the mix of veterans as well as younger players in the early going, and has seen the upperclassmen fill the leadership role nicely. “We have a pretty even number of returners and newbies, our captains have been stepping up and leading which is fantastic. It’s going to be a great year,” said McCaughey. Overall, team chemistry has been the biggest component in the strong start according to McCaughey. “The team chemistry is the best that it’s been, everyone is positive, there’s not a lot of drama. They came in this year ready to work and have fun, but they know that in order to do that we have to positive, kind and encouraging. It started in training camp, we set the bar and told them what kind of team that we wanted to have and it has been just that so far,” said McCaughey, who also believes that good communication and teamwork will be the biggest key to the Pats turning things around in 2019. “The key is going to be communication and continuing the team chemistry even further. It is going to be about knowing where everyone is and understanding how this group plays … as long as the communication in team chemistry is there the rest will come.”
