The Pilgrim girls soccer team has gotten off to a tremendous start this fall season, jumping out to a 3-0 record by a combined score of 19-3 and most recently topping rival Toll Gate 5-1 on Tuesday.

The Lady Pats took a 3-1 advantage into halftime against Toll Gate and maintained the lead the rest of the way. Alanna Coffie led Pilgrim with two goals while Lily Brown, Sarah Lynch and Gillian Brown scored once each. Pilgrim keeper Janelle Mixner recorded seven saves in net in the win.

Toll Gate’s lone goal came from Olivia Dutra and was assisted by Cassie Cirella. Toll Gate’s Maddie Clark and Kylie Whitney combined for 12 stops in net.

The Pats steamrolled visiting Coventry 9-1 last weekend, seeing eight different players score goals.

Haylee Marcotte scored twice while Lynch, Alanna Coffie, Alanna Brown, Gillian Brown, Kate Ignagni, Amaya Coffie and Lily Howard all chipped in scores. Lily Brown, Amaya Coffie and Faith Meade all recorded two assists while Ignagni added another. Mixner made four stops in net in the win.

“We played freshmen and sophomores in the second half, predominantly freshmen, so we have some depth which is good. The younger ones are definitely complementing the older ones. We had nine goals and eight different scorers. They’re ready to go. They won the middle school state championship, so I knew what we were getting. They’ve played a lot of soccer,” said Pilgrim coach Tom Flanders, who has been impressed with his young core so far.”They’re excited, they’re ready to learn, they respect the older players because the older players have quite the pedigree themselves. It’s a good working situation, it’s led to friendships and relationships so it’s been good.”

Pilgrim won its season opener against Smithfield in a 5-1 victory.

Lily Brown led the Pats with two scores while Alanna Coffie, Ignagni and Lindsay Flanders all scored once. Alanna Coffie and Lynch added two assists each while Amaya Coffie scored another. Mixner finished with seven saves.

Although the season is unusual, Flanders is proud of his team and its ability to adapt to the new situation.

“They’re living with it, they know it’s the same with everyone and they know they’re lucky that they are out there at all. We’re just super happy to be out there in any capacity. The kids don’t look at the masks as a burden because they feel blessed,” said Flanders.

Pilgrim improves to 3-0 on the year and will next take on Cranston West this Saturday. After a perfect regular season last year, the Pats came up short in the playoffs. The returning players are hungry to compete for a title once again and are looking to have fun in the process.

“They’re super focused. The only thing we’re waiting on is the format. We are confident that we will be one of those teams, but we’ll have to wait and see,” said Flanders. “We’re just having fun with this group, we’ve gotten a lot of enjoyment out of playing and having some normalcy.”
