Pats overpower Tigers in shutout win

The Pilgrim Patriots blanked the Tiverton Tigers, 3-0, on Tuesday afternoon at home to improve to 4-1-2 in Division III.

Pilgrim junior goalkeeper Max Caracuzzo had five saves and Tiverton netminder Dillon Guerrera made 12 stops.

Less than two minutes into the contest, the Pats got on the board when senior Dominic DeNuccio found the back of the net after an assist from Collin Murphy.

Pilgrim added its second score with 12:43 remaining in the opening half. It came after senior Evan O’Connor drove into the Tiverton zone and passed to junior Zajdele Dulcine, who left it for Danny Peixinho and he fired it into the net to put the Pats up, 2-0.

The Pats added their third goal just before the final buzzer when senior Thomas McMullen dribbled in between three defenders and shot it past Guerrera.

Pilgrim heads to North Providence on Friday night to take on the 3-4 Cougars at 7 p.m.

Despite the team’s shutout win, Pilgrim head coach Bill Carroll is still hoping that his team can learn to close out its opponents.

“I think we can’t finish the way we should be finishing,” Carroll explained. “If we could finish, we would have been six or seven up and then I could get everyone into the game and things like that, but we can’t finish. We’re opening teams up and playing well all the way to the shooting part and the shooting part’s just not working. They do it in practice, but they choke in games. I don’t know what it is. We got to get them sharper at finishing and I’ll be happy. The rest of the play, I’m fine with.”
