PAIN AND GLORY

(Almodovar's latest soap opera)
Up for a Golden Globe, Almodovar's latest soap opera concerns Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas), a film director who has a number of ailments that prevent him from completing his next picture. He is hooked on prescription medications and eventually heroin, which leads him into a dream-like existence where he relives his past, making the film a combination of his present problems and his difficult past.
Penelope Cruz plays his mother during his young years, where they live in a cave in Valencia.
The movie is about lost love and unfulfilled dreams, with numerous flashbacks, long conversations and boredom.
Rated R for sex and drug use.
