Registration is open until April 26 for the upcoming session of evening swim lessons, which begin the week of May 6 and run through mid-June at McDermott Pool on Sandy Lane. Three levels of classes will be offered for children age 5 to 11. 

Mayor Joseph Solomon said the classes are being offered for the first time in nearly ten years, based on community interest and as part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to improve recreational facilities and expand programs for the community to enjoy. Based on demand during the inaugural five-week session, which concluded this month, May sessions have been expanded with additional classes offered on Monday and Tuesday nights and a third day, Wednesday, added as an option. 

“I’m so pleased that this program is already being met with such interest and enthusiasm,” the Mayor said. “Not only does this offer our kids a great way to exercise and have fun, but it will also help make Warwick ‘swim safe’ for the summer. I applaud our Parks and Recreation Department for recognizing the need for an affordable swim program and for working so diligently to make this program a success.” 

During each class, students will practice a previously-learned skill, learn a new skill and demonstrate a component of swim safety. The last several minutes of class will be used to incorporate what students have learned into a game or fun play.

A five-week session is offered at $25 (second child fee is $20) for Warwick residents and $30 for non-residents ($25 for second child). Right now, about ten spots remain for the May session, but once they are filled additional classes will be scheduled to meet demand. 

Registration is available at McDermott Pool, 925 Sandy Lane, during normal hours of operation. The pool is open Monday-Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
