College Notes: McGrath emerges for Wentworth

After playing a supporting role in her first three years on campus, Toll Gate product Grace McGrath nailed down a starting role for Wentworth in her senior season.

The ex-Titan started the season on the bench, but entered the starting eleven in the Leopards’ second game, a scoreless draw on September 1 versus Clarkson during the team’s Labor Day weekend swing through upstate New York.

McGrath has also matched her goalscoring output from her sophomore year, tallying on a pair of occasions, including her first game-winning goal at the collegiate level.

The deciding goal in question came in the 17th minute of Wentworth’s September 19 contest against WPI, where she beat Engineer goalkeeper Gabriela Hoops to the upper left corner of the goal for the only marker of the match.

For the Leopards, the win was significant in the sense that it was the first time that they were able to defeat WPI since 2002, having dropped 15 straight to that opponent in the intervening years.

Later in the season, McGrath was able to add to her ledger by opening the scoring against Nichols on October 6, seizing upon a deflected cross to net in the far corner for her fifth career goal in Wentworth colors.

On that occasion, the Leopards raced out to a 3-0 lead inside the first half-hour, but the visiting Bisons charged back with a pair of their own, but the home eleven held on for the 3-2 victory.

Wentworth will be looking to conclude the regular season on a high when they take on the University of New England on Tuesday, after snapping a four-match losing streak with a 2-1 decision over Roger Williams on Saturday.

In defeating the Hawks, the 7-8-2 Leopards will have a chance to reach the .500 mark for the season when they take on the Nor’easters, who last beat Wentworth in the semifinals of the 2015 ECAC New England tournament.

Toll Gate alumna Laurel ten Eyck played her part in Rhode Island College’s successful defense of its Little East championship on the tennis court this past Saturday, helping the Anchorwomen down Plymouth State 5-1 to claim its second straight conference title.

The former Titan was responsible for two of the points, opening her day alongside Katherine Braganca in doubles action against the Panthers’ Sage Winter and Maggie McCarthy.

They picked up the second point of the contest, defeating the Plymouth State partnership 8-3 after Grace Zangari and Hailey Raskob gave RIC a 1-0 advantage with an 8-1 triumph of their own.

Ten Eyck later put the Anchorwomen on the brink of victory by putting the team 4-1 up via a 6-0, 6-2 decision over the Panthers’ Megan Wheeler.

The victory qualified RIC for next spring’s Division III NCAA tournament, where they will be hoping to advance further than last year, when they fell 5-0 to Tufts in the second round after knocking off Nazareth 5-2 in their opener.

The Anchorwomen will be entering the winter break with an unblemished 17-0 mark, with five of those victories coming via sweep, including conference tilts versus Bridgewater State and Worcester State.

Speaking of perfection, ten Eyck will also be going into the hiatus with an unbeaten record in singles play, going 13-0 while playing mainly in the number-six slot.

On the other hand, doubles competition has been more of a challenge for the sophomore, where she has been only able to accrue a 9-8 mark as part of RIC’s top pairing.
