North 10's come up short

The Warwick North 10’s fell to Narragansett in the losers bracket of the District 3 playoffs last week, putting an end to their summer after finishing the tournament with a 2-2 record.

North dropped it’s first game of the tournament to Westerly, but would bounce back and win its next two against North Kingstown/Wickford and East Greenwich to set up a match against Narragansett.

Narragansett’s offense took off in the matchup, as it cruised past North, 14-8.

“I was very happy with the progression that we made. We had a rough first game but pulled it together and battled back. We were right in the game with Narragansett, but we just happened to lose to a team that played better that day. We battled right until the end. I was happy with it, I was happy with the kids that took leadership of the team, I was very pleased with the results,” said North manager Jim Forcier.

Zach Fontenault led the way at the plate for North, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI. Connor Forcier went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Paul Smith, Riley Barker, Stephen Richardson and Payton Moran all contributed an RBI.

Despite the loss, coach Forcier was proud of the team’s effort, and feels that it learned a lot from the run.

“I think a huge part of this team, and what they learned, was confidence and knowing that they belonged there. After losing the first game, the kids lost some confidence, but then they came back and regained that confidence which was huge. I was really impressed with this group, their sportsmanship and attitude, I couldn’t have coached a better team. Another thing is that we were in every game, even the ones we lost. We just have to make some minor tweaks,” said Forcier.

North is now down to its 12-year-old team, that played in the winners bracket on Monday evening, but the final results were not available at press time. Coach Forcier feels that North is as strong as ever as a league, and will continue to field strong teams for the long haul.

“I think Warwick North is well-situated with the kids that we have currently. Looking at our 9-year-olds all the way to our 12-year-olds, I think North is in a good place,” said Forcier. “I think whoever wins District 3 has a lot to be proud of. District 3 has a rich tradition and Warwick North has always been a part of it. There are a lot of great teams in District 3, so for us to go 2-2, I am happy with it and it bodes well for us in the future.”
