The Middle School Cross Country Division Championship took place Tuesday afternoon at Rocky Point Park. Seven schools participated in the race and the course was 1.81 miles long.

Coventry’s teams placed first in both the boys’ and the girls’ races with Cam Vesey and Adam Vesey finishing in first and third, respectively, in the boys’ competition. Western Hills’ Blake Santos took second while his teammate, Jaden Capuano, took fourth and Hope Highland’s Alex DelNigro placed fifth with a time of 10:55, followed by teammates Caleb Johnson in eighth place while Jared Gilmore took ninth.

“I think they did a great job today,” Hope Highlands’ head coach Frank Notarianni said of his runners. “I think they all worked hard and we had some good results.”

Hope Highlands’ Estella Kue took first place overall in the girls’ race with a time of 13:13 and Western Hills’ Rachel Hobin took second. Park View’s Fiel Woods took third, and Coventry’s Brook Ellis and Mia Gabel finished out the top five.

Overall, the Winman boys went on to place fifth, while Vets earned sixth.

For the girls, Vets finished second, followed by Hope Highlands and Park View in third and fourth, respectively. The Winman girls placed fifth.

Winman coaches Mike Vadney and Peter Kiley felt that their squads put in a good effort during the contests. Eva Scott and Jaehee Hyunn finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the girls’ event.

“Today, that was a really competitive field,” Vadney said. “They haven’t run with that many runners before if you don’t count the Ocean State that we did at the start of the season. Fast times were set on this and it was a different course than they’re used to running because they had to set it up for the number of runners. So, overall, really proud of the way they ran. They love to run. They come to practice with a positive attitude and they’re just a pleasure to coach.”

“The kids did well this race,” Kiley added. “The girls did outstanding. We had some top finishers for the girls. Boys did well. In addition, a lot of personal bests. A lot of personal outstanding efforts. We’re working hard to build a culture of running, a culture of success here and the kids this year are eating it up. They’re showing up ready to run, ready to practice, with a positive attitude. They’re a great team. They’re all friends with each other. It’s been an outstanding season.”
