Mary Elizabeth “Betty” True, age 87, went to eternal rest peacefully on September 7, 2020 at The Saybrook at Haddam, Haddam, Connecticut after a long illness with her family by her side.
Betty was born on November 28, 1932 in Providence, Rhode Island to the late Irving and Katherine True, residing in Cranston, Rhode Island. Betty graduated from Cranston High School. Betty worked at Dodge McGraw-Hill for a number of years as a construction news reporter. Her territories included the southern New England region. She was a long time active member of the Edgewood Congregational Church in Cranston, once serving as financial advisor to Sunday school.
Betty enjoyed volunteering at the Providence Performance Arts Center as an usher. She was an avid gardener and painter. Betty liked to knit, and especially enjoyed knitting scarves and mittens for the church bazzar. She enjoyed baking cookies for the church bazaar as well. Betty enjoyed knitting hats for newborn babies, and gave these hats to Rhode Island Hospital. She enjoyed the sunsets at the Oakland Beach in Warwick. Betty also enjoyed traveling with good friends to many destinations around the world.
Betty is survived by and will be dearly missed by her brothers Irving and sister in law Claire of Fort Washington, Maryland; her brother William of Old Saybrook, Connecticut; her niece Melinda and husband Nate Stabler and family of Marietta, Ohio; her nephew Joseph and wife Leslie and family of Oxon Hill, Maryland; her nephew Christopher and wife Amy and family of Sykesville, Maryland; her nephew Bill and his wife Jennifer and family of South Berwick, Maine; her nephew Jeff and his wife Paige and family of Old Saybrook, Connecticut; her nephew Scott and his wife Jen and family of Coventry, Rhode Island, and her nephew Shawn and his wife Donna and family of Westbrook, Connecticut. She leaves behind many grand nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her parents Irving and Katherine True, formally of both Cranston and Warwick, Rhode Island, and her sister in law, Carolyn True, of Old Saybrook, Connecticut.
The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the staff of The Saybrook at Haddam in Haddam, Connecticut for their care and support of Betty. A special thanks and appreciation to all of Betty’s neighbors at Governor Francis Farm, especially Jack and Joyce Falk.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Providence Performing Arts Center or The Saybrook at Haddam.
