Mother’s Day is devoted to the women who have nurtured and comforted us all our lives, whose love and hard work have made our stories – and our successes – possible.
That’s an awful lot to be thankful for. So what’s the best way to show our appreciation?
Representatives from local shopping destinations say a wide range of options are available – and some new trends have emerged alongside traditional Mother’s Day staples.
Janice Pascone, marketing director for Garden City Center and its parent company, The Wilder Companies, said a couple of Mother’s Day trends stand out. She said the best gift is “something that’s unique or that creates a special memory.”
“One of the biggest changes I’ve seen is more experiences – spending time with mom and having an experience with mom,” she said.
Linda Campbell, marketing director at the Warwick Mall, suggested taking mom out to enjoy a day of dining and entertainment.
“There’s everything for mothers, whether you take mom shopping or to dinner and a movie or brunch and a movie,” she said, offering Not Your Average Joe’s and Cork & Rye as dining options.
As an example of what Garden City Center can offer, Pascone suggested treating mom to a manicure at MiniLuxe followed by a meal at Legal Sea Bar or Bistro 22.
Pascone said the “other big trend” she has seen this year is personalization. Engraved or monogrammed items with the names or initials of children or grandchildren, she said, can have particularly special meaning for a mother or grandmother, and Providence Diamond, Anthropologie and L.L. Bean are among the center’s retailers to offer such gifts.
Yankee Candle offers a different twist on that approach, Pascone said – candles personalized with a picture.
“It’s a really nice present for either a grandmother or a mother,” she said.
Campbell highlighted Things Remembered as a store at which shoppers can find a special gift, such as an engraved keepsake. She said other possibilities include a “day of pampering” for mom.
Several stores at Warwick Mall are running sales through Mother’s Day, Campbell said, including Zales and Kay Jewelers. The Paper Store offers a “great selection for mom,” she noted, including a line of Alex and Ani “Game of Thrones” jewelry items that are timely as the hit show’s finale approaches.
“That’s a biggie,” she said.
For more practical gifts, Pascone suggested Garden City Center shoppers keep in mind items like the popular Instant Pot available through Williams-Sonoma or fitness apparel at Lululemon.
“Workout clothes are big,” she said.
Pascone also said items with lemon prints – such as clothing and towels – have been popular this year and are available at Anthropologie.
“It’s everywhere right now,” she said.
At Sephora, Pascone said, shoppers can find gift sets such as perfume samplers. Whole Foods and Crate & Barrel, meanwhile, offer mini potted succulents, which have also become increasingly in demand.
“I think plants and flowers are still big, but usually they want to give that in addition to something else, something more meaningful … There’s a lot of great stores here to get whatever you need,” she said.
