Pats, Titans secure shutout victories

The Toll Gate and Pilgrim field hockey teams posted 2-0 victories on Friday afternoon, with the Titans powering past Rocky Hill and the Pats downing Cranston East.

Toll Gate scored once in each half with tallies from Alyssa O’Keefe and Nicole Procaccini, while senior Mary Greenwell shined in net, turning aside all 10 shots sent her way to record a shutout.

Conversely, the Pats were locked in a scoreless game with winless Cranston East at halftime, before Pilgrim got second-half goals from Trinity Reilly and Olivia Paquet to escape with the victory. Samantha McConnell also recorded an assist to help orchestrate some offense.

The Titans (5-3) will be back in action this afternoon against Lincoln School at Faxon Farm in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, at 4:15 p.m.

Pilgrim (4-2) will be at Woonsocket this afternoon for a 3:45 p.m. start as well.

Titans battle undefeated Sentinels to draw

The Smithfield boys’ soccer team entered Thursday night’s matchup with Toll Gate undefeated, but the Titans would give the Sentinels all they could handle.

Toll Gate got two goals from striker David Roa as the Titans and Sentinels played to a 2-2 draw in Division II action.

The two teams went into halftime tied at 1, and Roa would put Toll Gate in front, 2-1, early in the second half, but it didn’t take long for Smithfield’s Nick Cerroni to respond with the equalizer to tie the game once again for good.

Brandon Franco was outstanding in net for the Titans, stopping 11 shots to help his team clinch a point.

Toll Gate followed that performance with a 5-0 loss against Mount St. Charles on Friday to fall to 1-5-1 on the season.

The Titans were looking to bounce back against Middletown on Monday, but results were unavailable at press time.

Pats shut out Cougars

Pilgrim improved its record to 5-1-2 in Division III with a 2-0 boys’ soccer victory at North Providence on Friday evening.

After a scoreless first half went by, the Pats got goals from seniors Evan O’Connor and Matt Woods in the second half. Those tallies and a shutout performance from Max Caracuzzo in net sparked Pilgrim to victory.

The Pats are now in a good spot near the top of the D-III standings, and they’ll look to continue their success when they travel to take on winless Paul Cuffee today at 4:15 p.m.
