The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team recently traveled to Bunker Community College in Charlestown, Massachusetts, to play the Bulldogs in a Region XXI interdivision game. The Lady Knights defeated the Bulldogs, 75-47. With the victory, CCRI improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Region XXI play.

It was the home opener for Bunker Hill, and the Bulldogs began the game playing with great intensity to defend their home court. It was the third game of the year for the Lady Knights, but they received a boost by playing with nine of their 10 rostered players as opposed to their recent road trip where they only had six players.

In the first quarter, both teams battled pretty evenly, with the Lady Knights emerging with two-point advantage with the score 14-12. CCRI was paced by Ireauna Pegus, who scored six points, while Janessa Perry and Nicole Chamberlain each added a 3-pointer. Adanna Hector did her part for the Bulldogs, scoring seven points to help keep pace with the Lady Knights.

With a two-point lead, head coach Doug Haynes made some defensive adjustments for the Lady Knights that allowed them to take control of the game and extend their lead. CCRI held Bunker Hill to just eight points in the second quarter while rattling off 23 points with a balanced attack which included six points from Jada Burton, five points from Ireauna Pegus, four points from Reilly Hodge and another 3-pointer from Chamberlain. At the half, CCRI had a commanding 37-20 lead.

In the third quarter, Bunker Hill once again came out with tremendous intensity that allowed them to have their highest scoring quarter of the game with 14 points. But the Lady Knights still outscored them 17-14, led by six points from Burton and five from Kelsey Kozlin.

With one quarter remaining, CCRI led 54-34. They did not take their foot off the gas pedal, as they scored 21 more points while holding the Bulldogs to just 13 to cruise to the 75-47 Region XXI road victory.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Pegus, who was tied for game-high with 16 points including two 3-pointers with six rebounds and three steals. Burton also scored a game-high 16 points with four rebounds and a steal.

Kozlin had a very good game with 11 points including a 3-pointer with six rebounds and four steals. Chamberlain scored 10 points including two 3-pointers. Rounding out the Lady Knights who scored in double-figures was Janessa Perry, who came off the bench to add 11 points including a game-high three 3-pointers with two rebounds and a steal.

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, the Lady Knights traveled to Orange County Community College in Middletown, New York, for a game versus the Colts.
