NAVIGATING NETFLIX

There are no new movies at the only two movie theaters open in Rhode Island.

Half the movies at Showcase are streaming on TV at a cost below what you would pay at the box office (“One Night in Miami,” for example).

Like many others, we have turned to Netflix for our entertainment. We have adjusted to watching the movies on a smaller screen, making our own popcorn, and feeling warm and safe.

Checking out the plethora of options can be overwhelming, so we often turn to our daughter and son-in-law, who have been fans for years.

We check out newspapers, magazines and TV ads for the latest selections.

We also use the internet, typing in the name of the movie or series, then going to its site to get reviews from IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, and reading the synopsis on Wikipedia.

It all started with “Breaking Bad,” went all the way to “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and continues with other top-rated older shows.

The latest series was “Spotless,” which Rotten Tomatoes rated as 100 percent. We would put it at about 75 percent for its disappointing ending, unlikable characters and explicit sex and gore (necrophilia is not one of our favorite subjects).

There were some very interesting and absorbing moments, however. The hero is a Frenchman living in London who runs a crime scene cleaning service. He cleans up all the blood and gore, leading a comfortable life until the mob hires him to clean up their messes.

Search for little gems, like “The Making of ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ or “Ma Rainey’s Legacy,” that take you behind the scenes of the movie productions.

We are looking forward to “The Little Things” starring Denzel Washington, which is opening in theaters and on HBO Max.

JEOPARDY REIGNS

While the TV networks bombard us with inane quiz shows, “Jeopardy!” still reigns as the king.

While there will never be another Alex Trebek, just like there will never be another Johnny Carson, Ken Jennings is doing an excellent job as the “guest host” and makes a fine replacement.
