John P. Browning Sr., 73, of Warwick passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2018. John was the beloved husband of Jane H. Carmichael. He had been a resident of Warwick since 1972.

John was born in London, England in 1945 at the end of World War II. His father, the late Eric. W. Browning, returned to the U.S. with his Army division. John came to the U.S. on the Queen Mary as a six month old baby in the arms of his mother, a war bride, the late Margaret (Scott) Browning. John grew up in Cranston and graduated from Cranston East. Due to John’s excellent mechanical abilities, he went straight from graduation into the apprenticeship program at C.O. Hoffacker in Cranston, RI. During his years with Hoffacker, John was promoted to supervisor and eventually to Mechanical Engineer. He designed, built, trained operators, and rebuilt manufacturing machinery at times traveling around the U.S. and Eastern Europe. John’s final employment was with Supfina in N. Kingston, RI before his retirement.

John loved all things mechanical; especially cars. The proud owner of a vintage Mustang, he was a respected member of the Mustang Car Club of New England. He loved to share his knowledge with other members of the car club as they worked on their vintage cars, but especially enjoyed the many lasting friendships with other car club members. John also enjoyed being part of the Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership, a program enhancing the lives of Rhode Island youth through mentoring.

John was the loving father of two sons; John P. Browning, Jr. of Brunswick, OH, and Eric V. Browning of Portsmouth, RI. John also leaves three beloved grandsons: Layne, Kade and Callan Browning, and a sister, Valerie Browning Fontenot of Jackson, CA. An active member of the Pawtuxet Baptist Church, John lived a life of faith filled with good humor and love for his church family.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, September 29, at 10:00 a.m. at the Pawtuxet Baptist Church, 2157 Broad St., Cranston, RI.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pawtuxet Baptist Church or Tufts Medical Center, Cardiac Care Unit, 600 Washington St. #465, Boston, MA 02111. Attn: Donna Hernandez, Nursing Research Fund.
