Island Moving Company comes to Warwick

Posted

The Island Moving Company has been a shining light on the Newport arts scene for 37 years, performing their contemporary dance concerts at the mansions and touring in other states.

Last weekend, the company graced the stage at Warwick’s Gamm Theatre for “Convergence,” a stirring program featuring six divergent pieces, topped off by the IMC premiere of “Mazurkas,” an ensemble dance performed to the music of Chopin.

Island Moving Company dancers are young, talented and innovative, showing their skills in solos, duets and ensemble pieces, including a clever “Voices Around the Table” performed by four dancers who used a butcherblock table as a clever prop.

“Night Vision” was a popular dance in their repertoire, with music composed and performed live by cellist Adrienne Genest.

The company boasts dancers from as near as Seekonk and Pawtucket and as far as Cuba and Kazakhstan, under the artistic direction of Miki Ohlsen, who has led the company since its inception.

The “convergence” of Gamm and Island Moving Company fulfilled one of Gamm’s Artistic Director Tony Estrella’s goals of making the theatre available for other arts groups. The theatre is flexible enough to make use of the original tier seating and stage, bringing the audience close to the production.

Gamm is reaching out to other organizations to take advantage of the space, free parking, easy access of the major highways and, especially, the warm and comfortable atmosphere.
