Ken Capellan, a senior guard, buried eight 3-pointers and totaled 29 points as he led the Titans past the Scituate Spartans 94-52 on Monday night at Toll Gate High School during a Boys Division III Basketball battle.

The 94-point total marked a season-high for the Titans this season.

“I was pretty confident that we were going to win, but we shot a ridiculous percentage from the field,” Toll Gate head coach Tom Rayko said. “I mean, that’s crazy. We could not miss at all. I think we could have thrown it over our head and it would have gone in.”

According to Capellan, the drill the team did prior to the game aided in the hot hands.

“It was just the warm-up we did,” Capellan said. ”We did something different this time and it just helped out more.”

Austin Noon, another senior guard agreed. He finished second in scoring with 17 points.

“I got in the flow early and I just felt like I just couldn’t miss,” Noon said.

“They both played terrific,” Rayko said. “Came out shooting lights out. We’ve been doing a lot of shooting at practice. So, that’s been one thing that we’ve been focusing on. So, let’s hope we can keep that going.”

Francisco Lopez, a junior guard, and Nick Lemoine, a senior forward, rounded out the double-digit scoring for Toll Gate with 13 and 10 points, respectively, and Alex Usher recorded eight points, 13 rebounds and five steals.

Toll Gate’s Paul Martineau, a senior forward, made his first career start in place of John Gyra, who was out with an illness.

“Paul’s an unbelievable workhorse for us,” Rayko said. “We had John Gyra, who was out sick, so I plugged him in because we want a guy who works hard in practice and comes out and gives his all in the games. He’s a hustle guy, pass-first guy. I like to see a guy like that get rewarded.”

Scituate’s Toby Stinchfield secured the opening bucket, but then the game was all Toll Gate’s.

Usher responded with a layup for the Titans, which jump-started an 11-0 run. During that spurt, Lopez stole the ball and scored via an old-fashioned 3-point play, and then Capellan and Liam Hart each sank 3-point shots and handed Toll Gate an 11-2 advantage.

Scituate’s Keene Yena put a stall to that surge when he made a 3-pointer and pulled the Spartans within 11-5.

However, Yena’s shot just delayed the inevitable as Toll Gate raced off to a 15-0 run after that. That run featured five points from Capellan, five from Lopez, three from Usher, and two from Noon, and that earned the Titans a 26-5 buffer.

Toll Gate widened its margin to 55-16 late in the first half before heading into halftime with a comfortable 59-25 lead.

With 6:37 remaining in the contest, Toll Gate junior Jairon Soto came off the bench and drained a baseline jump shot and upped the Toll Gate cushion to 82-46.

Toll Gate closed out the final four minutes with a 12-3 run, where Matt Roache hit a free throw, and Jude Booth buried a 3ball, and finally, Lemoine, a layup, plus a pair of 3-pointers, which put the Titans on top 94-49.

Scituate’s Fergus Highfield made a 3-ball as the final buzzer sounded and that got the Spartans within 94-52.

Between the two teams there were 26 treys made throughout the night.

Toll Gate improves to 9-3 with the victory, while Scituate falls to 1-11. Toll Gate travels to Davies Career & Technical High School (4-7) on Thursday for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
