Help clean up historic cemeteries this Saturday

Do you like history? Enjoy looking at beautiful things? Need some outdoor time? If you answered yes to any of these questions, join volunteers for a cleaning of the Johnston Historical cemetery #44 at 1010 Hartford Ave. on Saturday April 14 in observance of the Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries Restoration and Awareness Day.

This is not an actual holiday, but to those of us that are taphophiles it will feel like one. The statewide cleanup day was created through House Resolution #7205. There are approximately 3,200 historical cemeteries throughout the state.

Throughout the state, folks will be cleaning one or more historical cemeteries in their communities. Warwick has chosen to clean Brayton cemetery. This cemetery serves as the final resting place of over 1,200 folks from the last 200 years. Brayton is a seven-acre cemetery serving veterans from the Civil war through Vietnam and had been abandoned by its owners more than 20 years ago.

The volunteers of the Warwick Commission on Historical Cemeteries and the Apponaug Village Associations have since taken it upon themselves to clean and maintain this cemetery through grants and donations.

If you would like to help, come to the cemetery at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 14. Other communities throughout the state will also be hosting clean ups. Cranston will be cleaning Oakland Cemetery on Broad Street and the Warwick Commission on Historical Cemeteries will clean and spruce up Brayton Cemetery in Apponaug in Warwick.

For more information please see the Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries Facebook page or call Pegee at 527-1823.
