Grammas receives RIC's prestigious Murphy Award

Cranston native Eleni Grammas recently received Rhode Island College’s Helen M. Murphy Award, which is given to a female athlete that has achieved athletic greatness while being involved in the RIC community.

Grammas played soccer and competed in track during her first two years at the school, but would shift her focus solely toward track during her final two seasons.

As one of the track team’s leaders, she would go on to break school records, compete at nationals, and become an All-American for the Anchorwomen.

“It’s awesome, I feel like when you’re working for four years to achieve something athletically, it feels good to be recognized by the college’s coaches. I have been working with sports my entire life basically, I played soccer since I was 10 years old. It seemed like everything was building up to that moment, so when I received the email, I was very grateful,” said Grammas.

Grammas mentioned her first trip to nationals as a big source of motivation for her later in her career.

“When I entered freshman year, I didn’t even know what an All-American was … we were running for fun. In high school we knew what All-State was, but it wasn’t until sophomore year when I qualified for nationals and competed at the national meet that I realized the talent at that level and what it meant to be an All-American. That moment made me want to go back there and become an All-American, that pushed me toward improving each year,” said Grammas.

Grammas is a secondary education major and will now look to enter the teaching force. She is also an assistant soccer coach at West and hopes to become a track coach as well. She feels that her four years at RIC has prepared her for the next step.

“At Rhode Island College, we have the best program in terms of mentorship. I’m leaving Rhode Island College as a different person, I am a stronger individual, I am humbled by all the different people that I met, and I feel that I am extremely prepared to enter the workforce,” said Grammas. Here is a look at her accomplishments during his college career.
