Flickers International Film Festival seeks volunteers

The Flickers Art Collaborative Rhode Island International Film Festival is coming up next month. All kinds of films will be shown at the event, from sci-fi and fantasy to horror, foreign and even screenplay scripts. The festival is one of ten Oscar-qualifying film festivals, and has anything from major industry titles to breakout films, such as The Silent Child in 2017, which won the best short film category at the festival and went on to win an Oscar.

Founded 37 year ago, Flickers has run the festival for the last 22 years.

Organizers of the event, which will be from August 6th to the 11th, are looking for volunteers to help at their screenings and events. Volunteers should be over the age of 18 and available for at least 10 to 15 hours over the five days of the festival, according to Shawn Quirk, programming director at Flickers’.

A schedule for the event will be given at an orientation in a few weeks, where volunteers can pick and choose when and where they would like to help out. No prior experience is required, however a “passion for film” is appreciated, said Quirk. Volunteers will work at the box offices or even introducing the films at the festivals and doing Q&A sessions with attendees. They will be able to view the films in advance to prepare for the Q&A. As such, volunteers will serve as “the face of the festival” and “ambassadors for Rhode Island” to visitors from all over the film industry, said Quirk.

The festival will be at 83 Park Street in Providence. For those who wish to attend the festival itself, tickets can be purchased at the film festival website. Tickets are $10 for one screening, and information about what films will be shown are also on the website. Five screenings can also be purchased for the price of four. For more information on tickets, volunteer work or to sign up, they can be contacted at info@film-festival.org.
