Doris M. (Dyer) Carter of Warwick, died at her home on Monday, January 15, 2018 at the age of 95. She was the wife of the late Everett James Carter.
Born in Cranston, RI, a daughter of the late Charles Jillson Dyer and Bessie L. (Wilde) Dyer, she lived in Warwick for most of her life. Doris was a gifted classical concert pianist who studied at the Providence College of Music. Throughout her life, she taught piano and shared her love of music with her family.
A graduate of Aldrich High School, she was a member of the RI Honor Society. In addition to her musical studies, she attended Anderson University in Indiana. She worked as a bookkeeper and assistant office manager for Harris and Gifford, a former CPA firm in Providence. In addition to teaching piano, she worked for the school department in Indiana and Manpower in Australia.
She was a Mayflower descendant of Francis Cooke and Richard Warren. Her ancestry dates back to Colonial America where her family lines of Hathaway, Jillson and Dyer were Minute Men in 1776 and were involved in the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and WW I, as well as being the military wife of a WW II, 22 year career Army Veteran. A member of Spring Green Memorial Church, she served the church in various ways throughout her years. She was the past Mother Advisor of Cranston Assembly II Rainbow for Girls and member of the Grand Cross of Color. She was a 50 year member and past Worthy Matron of Signet Chapter #21, Order of the Eastern Star, and a past Grand Officer for the Grand Chapter of RI Eastern Star.
She was the mother of the late Everett J. “Jim” Carter, Jr., and the late Sue Carter Nelson. She was the sister of the late Bessie (Dyer) Secor. She is survived by her daughter, Janice Samples and son-in-law Bernie of Barstow, CA and her daughter, Beth Fish and son-in-law Ron of Warwick, daughter-in-law Nancy Carter of Savage, MN; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She also leaves her long time friend, Raymond Thornton.
Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 24, at 10 a.m. in Spring Green Memorial Church, 1350 Warwick Avenue, Warwick. She will be interred with her late husband at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, January 23, from 4-7 p.m. in the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Warwick, RI.
