To the Editor:

Are students at Rhode Island College being taught to hate our country? If the anti-American mindset endorsed by certain RIC faculty members is any indication, the answer is yes.

Jayashree Nimmagadda, interim dean of the Rhode Island College School of Social Work, has characterized America as a country that was created by killing and oppressing Native people and built enslaving Black people (“My Turn,” Providence Journal, 7/11/20). She admits her courses at RIC are saturated with discussion of racism, racial disparities, and white supremacy.

The summer issue of RIC Magazine reveals that Dean Nimmagadda is not unique in her disdain for America. We learn that assistant professor of social work Aswood Bousseau is committed to indoctrinating students with divisive Critical Race Theory. CRT promotes the slander that America has always been, and will always be, systemically racist.

Assistant professor of Africana studies Sadhana Bery tells us she embraces Black Lives Matter. She mentions the BLM protests but ignores how the death of George Floyd was exploited to justify burning, looting and mayhem throughout our country. She expresses no regret for the damage done.

Dean Nimmagada and her assorted Marxist malcontents are presenting a distorted version of America to their students. As Rhode Island taxpayers, we need to ask ourselves a question: Do we really want to pay for this crap?

Unfortunately, because of a decision by House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi and Senate President Dominick Ruggerio, we will be doing just that (“A better, bolder state college for all,” Warwick Beacon, Sept. 9). Under their leadership, the General Assembly just dumped an additional $5.9 million of taxpayer money on the RIC campus.

Are Joseph Shekarchi and Dominick Ruggerio clueless about the anti-American drift taking place at RIC, or are they aware and choose to subsidize it anyway? They should answer that question. And we the people should challenge the wisdom of continuing to support the miseducation of our young people taking place at Rhode Island College.
