Diane Barreto, 42, of Warwick, RI, passed away on July 29, 2018, after a six-month, brave and hard-fought battle with cancer. She was the daughter of Jose Barreto and Rosario Velez Cortes, both of Isabela, Puerto Rico. She was the fiancée of Steven E. Belanger, of Warwick, RI.
Born on April 4, 1976, Diane grew up in The Bronx with her parents and her two sisters: Carmen Kohn, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Lisette McLynch, of Oak Ridge, New Jersey. She graduated in 1998 with a degree in Mass Communications/Media Studies from Lehman College, of CUNY, and worked at BronxNet Community Television until February, 2013. She then moved to Warwick, RI, to be with her fiancé, and she worked at Scandinavian Home and the Rhode Island Quality Institute (RIQI). Diane had mentioned to friends and family that relocating to Warwick to live with Steve and his greyhound, Jackson (who also passed recently, on March 3rd), was the best move she ever made. Steve has said that Diane, and her decision to be with him, were by far the best things that had ever happened to him, as well.
Diane was a very sweet, quiet and thoughtful person, with a deep love of pop music, movies, novels and baseball games (favorite player: Xander Bogaerts). She loved attending ballgames, concerts and Comic Cons. She also had a love of decorating lawns, mantles, shrubs and railings that was unmatched. She was especially fond of Halloween and Christmas. Many will mourn her passing.
She is survived by her fiancé, and by her parents, sisters, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, a nephew, and many friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 2, in the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Avenue, in Warwick, between the hours of 4 and 7P.M. Burial will be in Puerto Rico.
