Officers Christian Vargas and Eric Lima responded to the Best Buy on Universal Boulevard on March 31 just after 4 p.m. after the department received a call about an unattended small child inside a locked and running car.

The officers found the vehicle and observed a toddler secured in a child’s seat in the back seat of the car. The child appeared to be in good health, but officers were unable to gain entry to the car. The keys were seen in the ignition while the car was in park idling.

Shortly thereafter, the child’s mother returned to the vehicle after exiting the Saver’s clothing store. She told officers that while she was driving she had become upset at the child due to her becoming anxious and throwing a toy. The mother stated she was stressed and decided to leave the child unattended in the running car to shop for a few minutes.

Officers spoke with the reporting party, who stated he had been with the vehicle and child for about 10 minutes prior to the officers arriving on scene. The officers then contacted DCYF to notify them of the situation, and they advised that the incident would be documented and an investigation conducted.

Upon running a check of the vehicle, it was discovered that it had no active registration. The woman was then informed that the vehicle could not be operated and it would be necessary to obtain other transportation for herself and her child.

Another party then responded to the scene to provide the mother and child with a ride. He told officers he would make arrangements to have the car towed.
