Oakland Beach Association Meeting

Mayor Joseph Solomon will be the featured guest at the February 13 meeting of the Oakland Beach Association. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club, 340 Oakland Beach Avenue. All neighborhood residents are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Tiny Hands

Warwick Center for the Arts, 3259 Post Road, is holding a class called Tiny Hands Feb. 13 and 20 from 10-11 a.m. Sensory exploration is a large part of the artistic experience. This series of classes will introduce children ages 3-5 to art projects which will allow them to express their creativity while stimulating their other senses. Oakland Beach Fire Barn Speakeasy

Watercolor Classes

Little Pictures: Watercolor Painting for Adults with Aileen Quinn will be held Saturdays, February 15 and 22 from 3-5 p.m. at the Warwick Center for the Arts, 3259 Post Road, Warwick. Explore the art of watercolor painting using a variety of processes and techniques to create "little pictures" that can be turned into greeting cards. Printmaking from Nature

Warwick Center for the Arts, 3259 Post Road, Warwick, is holding a Printmaking from Nature workshop February 18 from 9:30 a.m.-12 noon. Join for a fun-filled morning workshop focused on creativity and intuition. They will examine common textural objects found in nature as well as everyday household and recycled materials and use them in printmaking. Collage – Paper Sculpture

Warwick Center for the Arts, 3259 Post Road, Warwick, is holding a Collage – Paper Sculpture workshop February 19 from 9:30 a.m.-12 noon. Cost is $30 members/$35 non-members. This workshop will bring a new dimension to paper exploration. You will discover the possibilities with various types of paper substrate, including pressed dried natural items, shiny, smooth, rough, soft…nameless objects can be used in collage. Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held February 20 (weather permitting) at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway, at 6:30 p.m. (right near Pilgrim High School). Winter Programs

Belly dancing is now at the Y and starts at 10:45 a.m. This class is an hour long, once a week through February 26 and is free for Y members. Great Chowder Cook-Off

St. Mark's Church Great Chowder Cook-Off will be held February 29 with servings from 6-8 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, children under 10 are free. Menu includes chowder, assorted desserts and hot and cold beverages. Submit your favorite chowder (red, white, clear or corn) for judging or just come and do the judging. Prizes awarded for first and second place. Community Lunch

A community lunch and food pantry will be held February 29 from 11 a.m.-1 pm. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Everyone is invited to

participate.

St. Benedict Church will have a giant winter indoor flea market February 29 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and March 1 from 8 a.m.-12 noon to be held in St. Benedict Parish Hall, 70 Transit Street, Warwick. Thousands of items will be available. The kitchen will be open for continental breakfast and lunch. Snow cancellation date will be Saturday March 7 (In case of blizzard).

CHADD

The Rhode Island Chapter of CHADD, Children and Adults with ADHD, meets monthly in the historic Pine Room at Bradley Hospital in East Providence at 7 p.m. to bring the ADHD community together to hear from area professionals and network. The winter schedule offers psychiatric nurse practitioners with expertise in an integrated, holistic approach (April 1) and New England author, Sharon Saline, author of "What Your ADHD Child Wish You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life" on March 4. The public is invited. Broadway in Your Backyard

Broadway in Your Backyard will occur March 5 at 5 p.m. Start the evening with a full sit-down meal at the Kent County YMCA. Academic Decathlon Volunteers Wanted

The Rhode Island Academic Decathlon is actively recruiting volunteers for their Sunday, March 8 state competition. Serving as judges, volunteers evaluate the speech and interview skills of high school students or assist with exams and event management. The competition is hosted by CCRI in Warwick, and volunteers can serve in the morning starting at 8:30 or the afternoon beginning at noon or both as a “super judge.” Lunch is provided as well as training on the day of the event. Girls Night Out

Girls Night Out: Celebration of Women in Story and Song is being performed March 8, International Women’s Day. The performance will take place at the Southside Cultural Center, 393 Broad St, Providence, at 4 p.m. Featured performers are Valerie Tutson, Carolyn Martino, Katie Latimer and many others. Spring Literacy Tutor Training

You can make a difference in someone’s life by giving the gift of literacy. By giving just a few hours per week, you can help develop a stronger community while helping your neighbors improve their skills. Meat & Lobster Raffle

Warwick Fireman’s club, 750 Warwick Avenue holds a meat and lobster raffle every Saturday until March 21. Doors open at noon. In addition to meat and lobster tables there are a large screen TV, money raffles and gift table.

New Singers Wanted

Join West Bay Chorale as they continue their 40th season. The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center announced the start of their sexual assault support group, Our Voices. Our Voices is a psycho-educational empowerment group for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, intimate partner sexual violence, and sexual violence.  The first session will begin in February. For a group screening or more information call 738-9700.

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point is a free walking group that meets on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and Thursdays evenings at 6 p.m. They meet at the front gate. They walk at a moderate pace on the paved path that is about two miles. Dogs on leashes and children in strollers are welcome. Art Supplies Needed

Thrive Behavioral Health’s Housing First Program would greatly appreciate donations of used or new art supplies to support therapeutic art activities for the chronically homeless population and those who struggle with mental illness. Creating art reduces stress, anxiety, fears and depression in people with mental illness and raises a person's quality of life. EBC Center Volunteers Needed

Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency located in Warwick serving victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. They are currently in need of volunteers to assist with answering their hotline and/or providing childcare while clients attend weekly support groups. All In A Chord Meetings

All In A Chord, an a capella chorus singing four-part harmony, is now meeting at 2-4 p.m. every Tuesday afternoon at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 389 Greenwich Avenue, downstairs in the adjacent building. Anyone who loves to sing is welcome to come and visit any Tuesday afternoon. They are a group of friendly women with a common interest to sing. No experience is necessary except to be able to sing on key and have fun doing so. They sing music from the ’40s, show tunes, patriotic medleys and holiday music. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to anyone 14 years of age or older interested in joining the corps.

New Counseling Program Available

If you are experiencing a substance use problem with alcohol or drugs or a substance use problem coupled with a mental health problem such as depression or anxiety, a new program at Thrive Behavioral Health (formerly known as The Kent Center) may be right for you. Thrive is offering an intensive outpatient program for people battling substance use disorders and co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources. Moms for Moms

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Greenwich Bay Women’s Club

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. Green Airport Military Lounge Seeks Volunteers

The Rhode Island Military Organization (RIMO) Military Lounge at T.F. Green Airport is seeking volunteers to staff the lounge. Open 12 hours every day, the primary goal of the lounge is to provide a welcoming place for military service members, veterans and their families to relax and regroup during their travels. Approaching six years in operation, nearly 15,000 visitors have passed through the lounge doors. Yet, it’s the dedicated volunteers who keep the lounge open, clean, stocked and comfortable while providing a welcome smile and warm greeting to each visitor. Volunteers are asked to work four-shifts and may select their own work schedule but are asked to dedicate a minimum of four hours per month. Also, volunteers enjoy free parking at the airport. A great opportunity to give back to the community and thank our active duty and veterans for their service. All volunteers are required to fill out the RIMO application, acquire a background check, and attend a short training class. New volunteers can begin the process by contacting the RIMO office at 921-4393.
