Tri-City Elks

Disco party! Come shake your groove May 11 from 7 p.m.-12 midnight. Cost is $10 per person. Dress in your best ’70s outfit. There will be drink specials and Red Carpet photos. Dance the night away with DJ Robert Caramante. Cash prizes for best dressed.

Meadowlark Seniors

The Meadowlark Seniors, a social club, holds weekly meetings every Thursday at the St. Kevin Parish Hall, 333 Sandy Lane, at 1:30 p.m. The meetings are followed by coffee and refreshments. After refreshments, an activity follows. All seniors are invited to attend a meeting and see what they are all about. Scheduled meetings may be canceled due to inclement weather.

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point is a free walking group that meets on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and Thursdays evenings at 5 p.m. They meet at the front gate. They walk at a moderate pace on the paved path that is about two miles. Dogs on leashes and children in strollers are welcome. On Thursday, May 2 The Warwick Rotary Club hosts John McNiff, National Park Ranger at Roger Williams National Memorial. Flea Market Vendors Wanted

Ss. Annual Conimicut Spring Fling Fundraiser

The Annual Conimicut Spring Fling Fundraiser is scheduled for May 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the St Benedict's Parish Hall. Tickets are $29 per person ($12 for children 4-11) and include a buffet catered by Cassarino's Restaurant (chicken marsala, pasta, meatballs roasted potatoes, salad, dessert, coffee, tea), DJ entertainment, cash bar, raffle baskets, silent auction and door prizes. Buy tickets online at www.conimicut.org, at Davies' Service Station (1008 West Shore Road) or by calling 524-8404. All proceeds go towards the flowers and flags displayed along West Shore Road from May through September.

Iggy's Doughboy Dash

Iggy’s Doughboy Dash will take place May 5. Registration opens at 8 a.m., race starts at 9:30. This is a family-friendly timed 5K Run or Walk to raise money for the A-T Children's Project. Historic Cemetery Ceremony

The Pawtuxet Rangers will participate in a ceremony May 5 at 2 p.m. at Cranston Historic Cemetery #36 on Park Avenue in Cranston. The Rangers, Cranston Historic Cemetery Commission, Sons of the American Revolution and Society of Colonial Wars will be some of the participants. The cemetery has had a refurbishment and the group will recognize four Revolutionary War veterans, one of whom was amongst the first officers on the Continental Navy. There will be a new veterans grave marker unveiled and an interpretive sign.

Chamber Chorus Concert

The Chamber Chorus of the Rhode Island Children's Chorus (RICC) will give a concert at Greenwood Community Church, 805 Main Ave., Warwick, May 5 at 2 p.m. The chorus is the premier auditioned group of high school singers from the more than 200 members of RICC. The ensemble will be performing an impressive, varied repertoire, including everything from spirituals to classical works and contemporary choral gems. The chorus regularly tours and performs at high-profile invitational events and will have just returned from a special performance at Carnegie Hall. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door.

Daughters of Isabella

St. Benedict Circle#423, Daughters of Isabella will hold their meeting May 6 in the Fr. Lawless Hall at 6:30. They will pray the rosary and then have a business meeting at 7 p.m. Bring gift cards, baskets and/or basket items for the spring fundraiser. Ocean State Orchid Society Meeting

The Ocean State Orchid Society will have their next meeting May 11 a 1 p.m. The topic will be Advanced Windowsill Growing with guest speaker Helen Hersh, owner of Mount Prospect Orchids. Helen began her career growing orchids on her windowsill, winning AOS awards for her windowsill-grown Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums. She will be sharing culture tips, including which orchids are best suited to windowsill growers. She will also have orchids for sale. They will have the usual “grow and show” table and raffle. Public is welcome.

SPRED Liturgy

St.Benedict’s parish, 135 Beach Ave., will hold a SPRED liturgy at the 4 p.m. M May 11. SPRED Special Religious Development) is a religious program for the physically or mentally challenged. They have special friends from St. Benedict, St. Kevin, St. Timothy, St. Mary in Cranston, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Gregory the Great, St. Clemens and St. Francis de Sales, who will be preparing the alter and bringing the gifts during Mass. Greater Warwick Lions Scholarship

The Greater Warwick Lions Club announces its Academic and Community Achievement Award eligibility program. They will be awarding a $1,000 scholarship this year available to Warwick high school seniors residing in Warwick. The Greater Warwick Lions Club is a chartered member of Lions Club International and dedicated to the concept of community service. This award takes into account financial need and academic achievement as well as demonstrated community service of the applicants. Scholarships available

Applications for the James V. Johnson Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by J.O.N.A.H., Inc. are now available. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors who reside in Warwick School District 2. Chorus of Kent County Spring concert

The Chorus of Kent County, directed by Nicholas Laroche, present Rise Up and Sing! Comedy Fundraiser

Heritage Christian Fellowship, in cooperation with the Warwick Neck Improvement Association, is sponsoring a comedy fundraiser May 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and all funds raised are to assist in the renovation of the historical church on Warwick Neck and for the activities of the Improvement Association. Sacred Heart Golf Tournament

The annual Sacred Heart Church golf tournament will be held May 20 at Valley Country Club in Warwick. The day will start with a putting contest at 11 a.m. followed by lunch. Apply for Boys and Girls State 2019

The American Legion Boys State and the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State will take place June 16-21 at St. Andrew's School in Barrington. The course is on the workings of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. Students form their own political parties, formulate party platforms and conduct spirited campaigns for public office. All high school juniors are encouraged to apply. Scholarships are available. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to anyone 14 years of age or older interested in joining the corps.

Green Airport Military Lounge Seeks Volunteers

The Rhode Island Military Organization (RIMO) Military Lounge at T.F. Green Airport is seeking volunteers to staff the lounge. Open 12 hours every day, the primary goal of the lounge is to provide a welcoming place for military service members, veterans and their families to relax and regroup during their travels. Approaching six years in operation, nearly 15,000 visitors have passed through the lounge doors. Yet, it’s the dedicated volunteers who keep the lounge open, clean, stocked and comfortable while providing a welcome smile and warm greeting to each visitor. Volunteers are asked to work four-shifts and may select their own work schedule but are asked to dedicate a minimum of four hours per month. Also, volunteers enjoy free parking at the airport. A great opportunity to give back to the community and thank our active duty and veterans for their service. All volunteers are required to fill out the RIMO application, acquire a background check, and attend a short training class. Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources. Moms for Moms

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. The Norwood Neighborhood Association Crime Watch Committee is looking for residents to be part of a crime-prevention program. If you would like to be part of this important initiative, email to norwoodna@verizon.net or call NNA at 785-0616. Minimal time is required but it could save you a lot of headaches in response to a crime.
