Tri-City Elks

Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held Feb. 21 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway at 6:30 p.m. (right near Pilgrim High School), weather permitting. Winter Flea Market

St. Benedict Church, 70 Transit Street, will hold an indoor Winter Flea Market Feb. 23 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Thousands of items, indoor rain (snow) or shine, something for everyone. The kitchen will be open for light breakfast and St. Benedict famous hot wieners for lunch.

Coast Guard Auxiliary Safe Boating Course

Do you need your RI State Boating Card? Want to brush up on your skills? How about getting your family involved in safe boating? Sign up for one of two U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary courses starting February 25. The power boat course, boating skills and seamanship, runs from 7-9:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays and ends April 11 – in time for you to get your boat in the water for a great summer. This course is held at the East Greenwich Police Station. Discount for second or third members of your family sharing materials. It covers jet skis, boat handling, rules of the road, aids to navigation, beginning navigation, lines and knots, federal and state regulations, electronic navigation and more. The navigation course is a 16-week course with hands-on help sessions, that takes navigation from the beginning, right up to celestial navigation and includes latitude, longitude, distance, direction, plotting a course, currents, set and drift, bearings, dead reckoning, line of position, etc. Both courses have lots of hands-on learning and individual attention. Buckeye Brook Coalition Meeting

The Buckeye Brook Coalition's annual meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. March 4 in the large meeting room of the Warwick Public Library, 600 Sandy Lane. After a short business meeting, there will be an announcement of upcoming volunteer opportunities, followed by this year’s guest speaker, John Torgan, State Director of The Nature Conservancy in RI. He will discuss current issues of river restorations and fisheries, as well as some of the work that The Nature Conservancy has done in Rhode Island.

Norwood Neighborhood Association

The Norwood Neighborhood Association will hold a general meeting March 6 at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, 43 Frederick St. The guest speaker will be Mayor Joseph Solomon, who will present a vision of his administrations goals for the City of Warwick. Also, a Community Police Officer will provide an update crime report on current trends in the neighborhood. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

Cranston Senior Guild

After a short meeting, Fran Ostendorf, editor of “Jewish Rhode Island,” will talk about the newspaper previously called  “The Jewish Voice.” Fran will explain the format and changes to the paper. There will be refreshments and a raffle. Men and women 55 or older are welcome to join the Cranston Senior Guild. Dues are $12 a year. Cranston residency is not required. On April 3, Alison Bologna will speak about Shri Yoga.

Cookies & Cocktails

Local chefs will be creating delicious desserts using everyone's favorite treat, Girl Scout Cookies, at the Cookies & Cocktails event being held March 7. Attendees will enjoy savory hors d'oeuvres, tasty Girl Scout Cookie creations, and the opportunity to bid on silent auction items. Tickets to this 21 event are $60 per person. The evening will be emceed by the one and only Mario Hilario WJAR.

Ocean State Orchid Society Meeting

The Ocean State Orchid Society will have a meeting March 9 at 1 p.m. at the Rocky Hill Grange, 1340 South County Trail, (Rte. 2), East Greenwich (enter through door at rear of building). Club member Kyle Fiedler will lead this meeting, entitled Growing Orchids in LECA as a medium.” LECA, or light expanded clay aggregate, is an aggregate made by heating clay to a high temperature in a kiln. Members are asked to bring in a plant that needs re-potting and the club will supply the LECA. There will also be the usual Grow and Show table and raffle. The public is welcome.

West Bay Chorale

The West Bay Chorale will be having their annual pop-up coffeehouse March 9 at 3 p.m. This will be at their new location, St. Kevin;s Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick. They have invited some outstanding local talent to perform Latin American Folk songs. Members from the chorale will be performing a variety of songs, poetry and dance as well.

American Legion Riders Post 2 Meat Raffle

The American Legion Riders, RI State Chapter Post 2, will be holding a meat raffle at the American Legion, 2 Legion Way, West Warwick, March 9 at 7 p.m. There will be three rounds of tables and, in honor of Saint Patrick’s Day, there will be a complete corned beef dinner on each table.

Academic Decathlon Volunteers Needed

Rhode Island Academic Decathlon is actively recruiting volunteers for their March 10 state competition. Volunteers evaluate the speech and interview skills of high school students or assist with exams and event management. The competition is hosted by CCRI in Warwick, and most volunteers serve from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Training is provided on the day of the event. YMCA Book Club

The YMCA Book Club meets the second Wednesday of every month at Atria Haborhill, 159 Division Street in East Greenwich, at 2 p.m. The Book Club is free and open to the community. No registration required. Reception for Col. McCartney

Retired Col. Stephen M. McCartney, who served as chief of Warwick Police, will be honored at a reception March 14 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza. Tickets at $25 are available at the Greenwood Credit Union, the Crowne Plaza, Central RI Chamber of Commerce, Warwick Beacon and Police Headquarters.

Corned Beef Dinner and Auction Fundraiser

Southern RI 4-H Fair will hold a corned beef dinner as a fundraiser event March 16 at 5 p.m. at the Metcalf School, 30 Nooseneck Hill Road, Exeter. It's not just a dinner; an auction and a penny social will be held during this event as well. Advanced tickets only; corned beef and cabbage are $12. Meat Raffle

West Bay Anglers are holding a meat raffle every Saturday through March 16, 2019 at the Warwick Firemen’s Club, 750 Warwick Ave. Doors open at 12 noon, raffle starts at 1:30. Tickets are six for $5.

Phantom of the Opera

Have you always wanted to see “The Phantom of the Opera?” How about dinner before, and transportation to the show? No worrying where you are going to park and how far you will have to walk to PPAC. The Kent County YMCA is offering a bus trip to the PPAC to see “Phantom of the Opera,” which also includes a buffet dinner before the show, on March 28. The cost for YMCA members is $80 and the cost for those that are not current members of the Kent County YMCA is $90.  Email Dom Doiron at ddoiron@gpymca.org.   

Preschool Registration

The Title I Office for Warwick Public Schools announces that preschool registration for the 2019/2020 school year has started. The Title I preschool program is a half-day program held at Oakland Beach Elementary School. This program is free of charge and is offered to families living in the Oakland Beach, Lippitt, Hoxsie, Park and Norwood areas.  Parents are required to attend three sessions per year for informative workshops to support family learning and kindergarten readiness. Fundraiser Yard Sale

The Chorus of Kent County is looking for donations of books, CDs and DVD s for their upcoming scholarship fundraiser yard sale/book sale. One hundred percent of proceeds will benefit Kent County high school seniors looking to pursue a degree in the music arts. Greenwood Choir

Women’s Auxiliary

A women’s auxiliary meets the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the William Shields Jr. American Legion Post 43, 662 West Shore Road. It is an open invitation to all eligible women who wish to participate in supporting our veterans. Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point is a free walking group that meets on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and Thursdays evenings at 4 p.m. They meet at the front gate. They walk at a moderate pace on the paved path that is about two miles. Dogs on leashes and children in strollers are welcome. Pilgrim Senior Center

The Pilgrim Senior Enrichment Center, located at 27 Pilgrim Parkway, offers educational, nutritional and recreational programs to folks 55 years of age and older. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources. Moms for Moms

Support a new mother, share your experience and make a new friend. You can make a difference with just one hour a week. Moms for Moms/Families First RI helps pregnant women and new mothers deal with an enormous transition by matching them with trained volunteers who are mothers themselves. The program provides emotional and social support and strives to connect new moms to resources within their own communities. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Evening Counseling Available

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences.
