Pilgrim Senior Center

The Pilgrim Senior Enrichment Center, located at 27 Pilgrim Parkway, offers educational, nutritional and recreational programs to folks 55 years of age and older. The center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The center will be closed Nov. 23 and Nov. 24 and closing at noon Nov. 22.

Chess players wanted at the Pilgrim Senior Center. Join in this game of strategy on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. in the Billiards Room. They will teach new players, so come give it a try.

Evening square dance classes coming to pilgrim senior center. Pilgrim Senior Center to introduce new evening Adult Enrichment Square Dance Program. Classes will be Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. starting Dec. 7. Participants must be 18 years old. Call Kathleen at 468-4074 for more information.

Tri-City Elks

Toys for our neighborhood kids. Come and enjoy good food buffet style Dec. 9 with music provided by Zinc Alloy. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy and a non-perishable item for food baskets as your entrance fee. Doors open at 7 p.m.  The toys will be donated to children in our community as well as some families that we will be donating a food basket to for the holiday.

Country Line Dancing Monday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost is $8 per person, and the instructor is Lori Enos. Come on down with your boots and kick up your heals.

Zumba will take place on Tuesday evenings beginning at 6 p.m.  Cost is $6 per person and the instructor is Lorraine Blanchard.  

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point is a free walking group that meets on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and Thursdays evenings at 5 p.m. They meet at the front gate. They walk at a moderate pace on the paved path that is about two miles. Dogs on leashes and children in strollers are welcome. The group calls themselves the “Rocky Point Pacers.” Call Cindy at 497-5656 for more details.

Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter

The monthly meeting for Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter will be held Nov. 16 at the Pilgrim Senior Center, 27 Pilgrim Parkway (behind Benny’s on Warwick Avenue and near Pilgrim High School) at 6:30 p.m. They will get the results of a pasta supper that was held Nov. 11 and finalize plans for a bake sale to be held Nov. 25 and craft show Dec. 2. JONAH Meat Raffle

JONAH (Join Our Neighborhood And Help) will hold a meat raffle at Meadowbrook Lanes, 2530 Warwick Ave., Nov. 16 from 5-7 p.m. Selections of meat (steaks, chops, sausage, ham) will be raffled off to benefit JONAH. Raffle tickets are 7 for $5 and can be purchased that night or ahead of time at Meadowbrook Lanes (call Rob at 527-1996).

JBF Shopping Spectacular

The PTA at John Brown Francis Elementary School, 325 Miantonomo Drive, is hosting a Vendor & Craft fair - the Shopping Spectacular Nov. 17 from 5-9 p.m. It is free to come browse all of the many vendors' offerings and get a jump on your holiday shopping. There is still space for vendors; it is $35 (check made out to "JBF PTA") for six square feet of space, and you must donate a new item for the JB Francis PTA to raffle off. All proceeds are your own. Bishop Hendricken High School is sponsoring its first annual NYC bus trip Nov. 18. Alienated Grandparents Anonymous

The Rhode Island members of Alienated Grandparents Anonymous will have a meeting Nov. 18 at 1:30 at St. Luke's Church (first floor meeting room), 99 Peirce St. East Greenwich. The guest speaker at both meetings will be Gabrielle Doucet, author of "Let Go and Let Love.” Gabrielle will speak and answer questions on topics dealing with grief. JONAH Yard Sale

JONAH (Join Our Neighborhood and Help) is vacating the building at 830 Oakland Beach Avenue. On Nov. 18 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. the building will be open and selling the remaining contents. Items include bookcases, tables, chairs, desks, kitchen items, jigsaw puzzles and much more. Purchases are cash and carry.  

Bake Sale/Yard Sale

There will be a bake sale/yard sale Nov. 18 at VFW Post 272 at the post home, 840 West Shore Road from 12-4 p.m.

Free Lunch

As part of a community outreach program, Spring Green Memorial Church is offering a free lunch of assorted sandwiches (including meatball) and chicken soup with chips and cookies to neighbors in the community Nov. 19 from 12-1 p.m. Each guest is welcome to receive one grocery bag of food (including Thanksgiving dinner items) from the pantry. Thanksgiving Gathering

People from St. Timothy, St. Mark, Pilgrim Lutheran and the West Bay Community Jewish Center will be gathering Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. for a service of Thanksgiving at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1817 Warwick Avenue.

Free Community Lunch

A free community lunch and food pantry will be held Nov. 25 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Everyone is invited to participate.

Christmas Tea

Heritage Christian Fellowship is having its annual Christmas tea on Sunday, December 3, at 4 p.m. It's a fancy tea with all the sandwiches and pastries that go with the occasion. There is a large assortment of door prizes to be given away. There is no charge for this event. Friends and neighbors are welcome to come and start off your holiday celebrations with us. Movie Screening

A movie screening will be held in honor of Ron Rounds, Warwick resident and former teacher in the Exeter-West Greenwich School system, Dec. 3 at 12:30 p.m. at the Avon Cinema, 260 Thayer Street, Providence. Kevin Decristofano and Shawn Flanagan will screen “The Eyes Behind the Stars,” one of the worst movies ever made, with comedic live riffing – just like Mystery Science Theater 3000. Cranston Senior Guild

The Cranston Senior Guild will hold its Annual Holiday Luncheon Dec. 6 at 12 noon at Mesa Café & Grill, 100 Rolfe Street, Cranston. The luncheon will include your choice of chicken marsala or baked fish, rolls, chicken escarole soup, salad, pasta, green beans and carrots. For dessert you have a choice of tiramisu or fresh fruit cup and coffee or tea. The total is $25 (tax and tip are included). Following the luncheon, there will be entertainment by Stan Freedman and Sounds of Simcha. A raffle will be held. Call for Vendors at Holiday Festival

Vendors are wanted for the yearly Holiday Festival at Edgewood Congregational Church, 1788 Broad Street, Cranston. The festival takes place Dec. 2 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. featuring gifts, raffles, children’s activities, baked goods, holiday items, economy shop and more. Bird Feeder Donations

Wild Birds Unlimited, Warwick, annually conducts a feeder swap event, which generates bird feeders for donations within the community. The feeders are completely refurbished and as a result are perfectly functional. The feeder swap has resulted in more than 50 feeders over the past four years and the feeders have been given to local schools, senior centers and assisted living facilities. If you are interested in obtaining a feeder for a deserving destination, contact Richard Del Sesto at 826-0606 or wbuwarwick@yahoo.com.

Alzheimer’s Support Group

Physical Fitness Training

A local non-profit will bring organized basketball, nutrition education and physical fitness training to 160-200 youth in Warwick. The program will run through Feb. 28, and players only pay a $25 fee for the entire season. They are a registered 501©3 non-profit, and they are currently close to capacity. Mentors develop a warm, supportive relationship while spending time with the new mom in their homes, accompanying them on outings and attending mom gatherings. Aphasia Conversation Group

On the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., Sargent Rehabilitation Center, 800 Quaker Lane, Warwick, holds an aphasia conversation group. Join the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife & Drum Corps of Warwick and continue the great tradition of Colonial/Revolutionary history through music. Bonniedale Farm in North Scituate offers dog and cat food at no cost to struggling pet owners, hoping to provide for the animals while easing the burden on community members facing tough times. Fife and Drum Corps

The Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Kentish Guards Armory on Pierce St. in East Greenwich. Free lessons on playing the fife are provided to men and young men interested in joining the corps.

Grief Support

If you have experienced the loss of someone you love and are ready to begin or continue the healing process, then you are welcome to come to a grief support group. Evening Counseling Available

Help for Victims of Crime

Are you a victim of physical or sexual assault, domestic violence, untreated childhood abuse, or another crime or traumatic event? Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased substance use or other emotional difficulties? Volunteers Needed to Sew

Looking for something to do to help foster kids? Organizers of The Sewing Project to Help Foster Kids are looking for volunteers who want to help sew pillowcase or duffel bags for foster children. Currently their belongings are sometimes put in black trash bags. Foster parent Adriane Grimaldi in Scottsdale, Ariz. started the Sewing Project in February 2008 for children taken from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) to make kid-friendly bags for carrying their belongings instead of trash bags. To date, people have made 6,700 pillowcase bags for foster kids Pillowcase bags are delivered to CPS to use instead of trash bags. The Sewing Project has opened a new Rhode Island Chapter working with the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and is in need of volunteers to sew. Cornerstone Church

Domestic Abuse Support Groups

The Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center is a non-profit agency providing services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The agency offers morning and evening support groups for adults dealing with current or past domestic abuse Groups provide a safe place to talk with others who have shared similar experiences. The groups are confidential and free of charge. For more information call Jessica at 738-1700.

Developmental Screening

The Child Outreach Department of the Warwick Public Schools, in cooperation with the Volunteers of Warwick schools (VOWS), conducts regular preschool screening clinics. All Warwick preschool children between the ages of 3 and 5 are offered the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R). This is a free service provided by the Warwick Public Schools. Participation in a Developmental Screening is a long established program of the Warwick School Department that provides families with information about their child’s development and offers information about community resources.
