The Bishop Hendricken Hawks swim team came out on top against the previously-undefeated La Salle Academy Rams in an 11-event battle at RIC on Tuesday evening. The Hawks steamrolled their opponent by a final score of 76-18.

“They had a couple of guys missing, but we’re alright,” Hendricken head coach David Hanson said. “We swam pretty well today. All and all, our seniors, Dillane Wehbe won a race, Lucas Stencel won a race and John Walden won the 200 free. Ryan McPherson, a freshman, won the IM. Those guys, they’re all doing well.”

The Hawks started strong, taking first place in the first event, the 200 medley relay, with a time of 1:45.95, which put them up 9-1. Hendricken’s four swimmers in the event were McPherson, Grant Dator, John Byrne and William Fitzgerald.

Walden kept the ball rolling for the Hawks when he won the second event, the 200 free, with a time of 1:55.22.

Next, McPherson won the 200 individual medley with a pace of 2:12.25, and that extended the Hawks’ edge to 23-3.

In the 50 free, Hendricken’s Connor Sheldon placed first, finishing in 23.21 seconds. Sheldon also took first place in the 100 free with a pace of 52.36, while his teammate William Fitzgerald took second.

Junior Jackson McDonough was the only La Salle athlete to win first place in an event, and he did so in the 100 fly with a time of 54.97 seconds. Hendricken’s Jon Smith placed second, and that pulled La Salle within 39-8.

Wehbe took first place in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.35, and his teammate Kevin Sawyer finished in second.

In the 200 free relay, Hendricken’s group of Aidan Blanchette, Fitzgerald, Walden and Wehbe took first place after finishing in 1:34.77, which added nine points to Hendricken’s total.

Stencel finished in first place for the Hawks in the 100 back with a pace of 54.62 seconds, and La Salle’s McDonough came in second.

In the 100 breaststroke, Dator placed first in 1:08.33, while La Salle’s Kendall Soares followed in second.

Finally, Hendricken’s group of McPherson, Byrne, Walden and Sawyer placed first in the 400 free relay with a pace of 3:44.34, which added nine points to the Hawks’ total score of 76.

Hendricken improves to 3-1 with the win, while La Salle falls to 4-1.
