TOM AND JERRY

***

Animated/live feature

I grew up with Tom and Jerry cartoon shorts. So did my kids. So did my grandkids.

Well, they’re back – this time in a combination animated/live action feature that you can catch at the Warwick Showcase or on HBO Max.

We have watched five different previews online and in TV ads. The movie is shown a dozen times daily at Warwick.

If you are nostalgic for the dueling cat and mouse, by all means, see it. You’ll remember a lot of the situations … and the violence. Otherwise, save it for another generation.

After they are kicked out of their present home, they end up back together at a fancy New York City hotel, where the staff is planning a big wedding. Of course, Tom and Jerry screw it up royally.

Chloe Grace Moretz, Michael Pena and Rob Delaney play the live hotel staff. There is actually a plot about a robbery, and lots of cat-and-mouse tomfoolery.

Rated PG.

On Netflix

STRANGER THINGS

This old Netflix series is still around and still attracts the younger crowd.

I found it so bad that I couldn’t stop watching it for its campiness. John Pannozzi turned me on to it with his references in his new book, “Laughing To Death.”

The kids are full-blooded nerds, picked on by their classmates, always in the wrong place at the wrong time, but somehow coming through against all odds. It goes on forever, so you may wish to pick a few episodes and check it out.

BLOODLINE

The 2015 American series takes place in the Florida Keys.

It is the tale of the Raymond family, a true American tragedy of lies, deceit and secrets that goes on a bit too long, but has some interesting moments. The prodigal son returns to disrupt his parents and siblings. Bad things happen. People do dumb things. It is a downer at times. Sissy Spacek stars as the matriarch of the family that operates a resort on the Keys.

STATELESS

This Australian series on Netflix deals with the continent’s immigration problems.

Emma has some mental problems. She runs away from her family and job and through incredible circumstances winds up in an immigrant detention center.

The movie is based on a true story and uncovers some disturbing facts about Australia’s immigration problems, but also becomes an exciting and intriguing tale.
