ECOLOGY DAY MARCHES INTO ANOTHER DECADE

(Riverpoint Village – W. Warwick, RI) In keeping with its Springtime tradition as an all-inclusive celebration of a reawakening for people and their surroundings, the 21st annual ECOLOGY DAY & PEACE PRAYER CEREMONY took place at the award-winning JAYCEE Corridor Arboretum & Senator Roch Riverwalk on a balmy Spring Day Saturday morning.

Held within the confines of Riverpoint COMMUNITY Park, the first act of this communal ceremony welcomed the contingent from the Navy Junior ROTC Program in Presenting and Posting of the Colors by the Cadets under the leadership of HMCM (SS) Edward Kay, USN (ret.), their Instructor at the Coventry High School Regional Career and Technical Center.

The Raising and Rendering of the Flag was assigned to Rob Martinez, Vice President of the W. Warwick Veterans Council and representatives from the Troop 528 Girl Scouts as they hoisted ol’ Glory into the beautifully majestic skyline.

Master of Ceremony Jack Lancellotta from the JAYCEE Education & Library Foundation called upon Laura Barlow from Gaspee Point in Warwick as Miss Elite Earth Rhode Island 2018 to lead everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Ms. Barlow had recently accepted the honor on behalf of the Town of W. Warwick and the JAYCEES at the state of Rhode Island Arbor Day Festivities held at Jamiel Park in the Town of Warren as a Tree City/USA Community awardee in the Ocean State.

The assembly was then introduced to local song-writer and guitarist, Robert ‘Bob” Fleury who orchestrated those present into a rendition of the National Anthem.

In uniting our spiritual personalities and possessions an Invocation was offered by the Rev. Rev. Douglas Tourgee, Pastor - Riverpoint Advent Christian Church to recognize and fortify our personal and environmental relationships with Our Creator.

There was also a declaration by the host community as the local government, as the Town Council declared the 21st annual Ecology Day of 2018. This official announcement also qualifies the town to participate with other criteria in the yearly Tree City USA re-certification via the RIDEM and the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Both Bob Fleury and Jack Lancellotta then briefly espoused some philosophical expressions about how all of society should become more communicative and appreciative of the extraordinary cultural, historical, religious and scientific surroundings we now live in as our own ‘ecology’.

In closing, Bob Fleury provided the audience with his composition of a song he wrote about the Pawtuxet Valley and specifically, the Pawtuxet River. Both he and Lancellotta had served together as Board Members of the Pawtuxet River Authority and Watershed Council, a regional quasi-governmental agency.

Once again, Rev. Tourgee came forth and offered a Benediction of Blessings on all gathered and upon our community, nation and world.

Lancellotta then proceeded to thank all who attended suggesting that after enjoying some refreshments sponsored by Dunkin’ Donuts and Westcott Bakery that all are invited to help plant 100 flowers as a memorial to the 100 victims of the Station Fire of 2003.

RI JAYCEE Alumni Members, Dwight David Colvin, gave a generous donation toward the Memorial Flowers we plant in dedication to the loss of three(3) of his relatives - Dad Earl Colvin & Uncles Lloyd Colvin and Harrison Day and Friend Stella DeGregory -
